I have a 72 johnson hydro electric I have been getting running. Just replaced shift solenoid, neutral safety switch, diode in throttle/transmission housing, and the rectifier. I just had it running strong on muff, probably 10 minutes, running fine, going through the gears, then the buzzer starts sounding consistently. I fooled with the controls for a second to see if anything stopped it then shut it down. When I hopped off the boat I noticed the water wasnt running.. My oldest doesnt like the loud noise i guess.. I dont know how long it was off.. I let it sit for a minute, and when turned the key the buzzer started right up. I didnt try turning it over. I see from the wiring that it is the overheat alarm. What could I have ruined?
-Its been sitting now for 15-20 while I did some research and posted this, turned key, no buzzer.. Will start later, first turn on water and check stream?

If my oldest did that to me he wouldn't be boat riding for some time. To bad you can't beat them anymore.

Your engine does not have a tell tale to verify water circulation, well not from the factory it didn't. There is a very good chance the pump is toast. You have experience dropping the lower unit so it shouldn't be too bad. I know some will say to run it to find out, but is the cost of an impeller and a couple hours labour worth the risk of the impeller coming apart when miles from the dock? DId you ever get the shift/hot wires issue fixed?

That engine was made years before the telltale came out. Still, there is a way to tell something about the cooling system: Start the engine from being cold-on the garden hose. When start it, put the flat palm of your hand behind the two exhaust relief ports at the top of the midsection. After a minute or so, the thermostat (vernatherm) will open. When it does, small water droplets will form on the palm of your hand. That at least indicates there is water to the powerhead and that the stat is functioning.

Thanks for the replies.. And jimbo, I believe I did get the wire situation taken care of. I was running it after replacing diode and rectifier.. did not feel any hot wires or smell burning.. was running at least 10 minutes, then buzzer, then noticed the hose off

I just ran it for about ten minutes, I had no water droplets on my hand after letting it warm up so cranked up the throttle and it started spitting water out those ports, does that pass the test or did I foul it up by putting it in gear? I had no waning buzzer either

also, water is coming from where the lower comes apart, not new, but I did feel the water and it was warm, almost hot, unlike the water coming out the spouts which was cold

When running on muffs, the city pressure will go past the impeller without necessarily being pumped by it. If it were mine, the leg would be coming off.

I agree. That's a long time with no water to the impeller. Replace it for peace of mind, if nothing else. It may look OK, but heat can harden it and it could quit at any time.

No Title

I tore down the lower this morning (instead of going fishing on her like I had planned). The impeller was actually still pretty rubbery.. It appears bad from what ive seen, the fins are not straight anyway.. but i imagine that was just wear and tear.. It was running on muffs for awhile before he shut it off, and maybe he didnt do all that much damage.. Also it looks like water is getting into LU Oil. --- The impeller was taken out when dissembling, Then i stuffed it back in there..

there was also what looked like a long thin spring that came out, pretty mangled, any idea what that was?

The impeller looks OK, but the housing may have seen better days.

Where did the spring come from?

Not really sure, it feel out of the housing as I pulled it off the top of the shaft... Really have no idea, I dont seen it on any parts list, or in the new kits... Im assuming I should still replace? Do I get new housing and all? And any thoughts on the oil?
