Ok It looks like you have a hydro electric shift gear case. If its actually still working well that's a good thing.
If the oil looks milky as shown in the pics then is gotten water in it. That can be as simple as the o rings on the fill screws or the seal under the waterpump or as bad as the housing on the gearcase leaking or a shaft seal. I would recommend you go buy a pressure testing kit and test the gear case for leaks before you go any further.
You can buy the pressure testing kit online fairly cheap as well as a factory manual while your at it.
the lower unit should hold pressure.
Also the hydro electrics used a different lower unit oil if i'm not mistaken.
That water pump impeller does not look too bad in the pic but you have it apart so you should change it regardless. Especially if you ran it dry.
Use OMC gasket sealing compound on the lower orings and gaskets and water pump bolts when you put it together. The oil filler screw gaskets/orings tend to leak quite often.

There's no big spring on the schematics for that gear case and water pump assembly. From your pic that looks like its part of that upper seal. If its leaking it should show up on the pressure test.

Good luck with it.

Yeah, that spring is a seal tensioner. You need to find where it came from as without it the seal won't work properly. Is the first picture the seal under the pump?

I opened up the water pump housing alittle more and found the seal, minus the spring, I was thinking I could have broken it when i took it apart in the first place, but i doubt that because of how mangled it is.
Aslo the shaft seal does look pinched, I will replace that as well

I guess you can hug your son now. He may have saved you from destroying the lower unit. ;p
