Re: Opps Updates

Zopperman My bud says it says mercruiser on it. Its a Chrysler 360 chrysler delivered more marine powerplants than any other back in the day tis too bad the govt made them get out of that business it was the only thing profitable that Chrysler was doing. I belly tank may not be as feasible as in the bow its pretty shallow below the floor would have to custom make a coupld of belly tanks for either side of the keel stringer. Hmm now thats got me thinking about a below the floor storage locker. The more storage the better right?

Oops on the soda bottles yea that was a concern of mine was looseing some structure in the foam by putting in the bottles around the foam. I was going to put in a little foam add the bottles on top and then add more foam. The bouyancy I was talkign about is the emergency bouyancy the foam provides the Bottles would provide more bouyancy than the foam would alone. I have a ton of plastic bottles I have from people who recycle so are rather soft some are fairly firm. I might be able to get away with using the firm ones. I know that once the boat is on plane the foam and bottles will do nothing for the boat except add weight (and structure in regards to the foam). I think I will definitely fill the areas that didnt have foam and were just air before anyways that are below waterline with foam and bottles it cant hurt.

I agree with you she is a sexy boat and I would hate to change that but would love to have some more room for passengers when going tubing or skiing. I could always pull an oops and stretch her 5 feet.

As far as putting a hook in her anyway to tell whether I have done that already besides picking a point sat 5 feet from the boat on each side and checking if its square with the stern from that point by cris crossing to the corners of the stern?

Theres not a lot of questions above, I have researched quite abit before tearing into this thought these stands would be quite good guess I need to rethink that now.

My main questions are on the crazing and will have to get more pictures of that before I can get a good answer. And that question is mainly do I grind it all off, grind out the cracks only, or use a build primer sand primer sand paint over it and hope it lasts. I plan on keeping this old girl another 40 years.

Re: Opps Updates

you wont have hoolked the hull by now......you are still in tear down. but you are point loading the hull right now....
think "bunk trailer"

as far as the gellcoat......we will need to see pics of the areas......but you are a long way from that.

the gellcoat is easy....you will whip right thru it in 2 days or less. !......prime and paint wont cover them...

gotta run to work now......im doing some plastic injection moulding for a company, including building the molds.....this process is quick and cheap.....it may just save us here on iboats a ton of searching for obsolete parts !!!!

cheers

Wonder what would happen if you filled the soda bottles with Helium? Seriously ...

Ya know I had never even though of that but then how would I seal it guess I would have to fill them upside down, cap and seal with resin. Hmmm now you got me thinking maybe I should make sure the bottles are all pressurized before use instead of atmospheric pressure. It would provide more stiffness in the foam then. With helium in it might make it even less sinkable I would think. I wonder how much I could pick up the stern with it Filled with Helium always the questions.

Looking great - Great looking boat - Make sure when you go to put her back together that the dimensions are right to accept the cap - Many a person has put the floor in and it was too wide to fit the cap.

lol.....if the helium was able to float a sody bottle it would help......but thats only because it (once attached to the hull) would make the hull lighter. there for displace less.
it would be the same as tying a bunch of helium balloons to the boat.

compressed soda bottles would help in the voids in the foam.......but foam has far more anti crush......it wont even crush under several atmospheres like a air filled soda pop bottle would

Re: More Stress Cracks

In my opinion,it looks like the cracks in the gel coat are from people walking or sitting on the top sides of the boat. The cracks on the transom remind me of damage from the boat being backed into something while trailering.

Re: More Stress Cracks

It's called crazing... stress fractures... YD has a really good tutorial on how to fix then.. basically grind away the cracks, fill with thickened gelcoat and then gel over that and sand and fair... look at his profile and started links for the tutorial..

I agree on all points but with the number of cracks and the amount of grinding that needs to be done I am wondering if it would be easier to just grind all the gel off the top and regel.

The cracks on the transom yeah with grind out and repair per yd instructions.
I have to do a lot of gel repairs on the keel as well.

Re: 74 Chrysler Conqueror SIII SuperBee 340 Jet rebuild and restoration

Havent gotten much more work on the boat been working on the chopper since I am itching to ride and got the go ahead from the wife to spend a little money on the parts for it. We are heading to Michigan for Christmas in the minivan and again got permission to spend a little money to buy and put on a hitch so we can bring the motor for the boat back on the trailer. Woohoo I can't wait what an adventure its going to be.

I did get some more grinding done with a flap disc on the transom its about ready now. I need to figure out how to remove the Jet body in order to get the transom completely done. I need to buy and dry the plywood for the transom atleast as well. Dad has already agreed to allow me to store it there. Its been raining everyday for the last three weeks hard to work ont he boat outside even with a cover. I need a full garage. I wonder how much I can get the wife to loosen up the wallet.

THanks for the tip think I will have to enlist some help before the foam and new deck go back in although the sides did flex quite a bit in and out but since I am planning on putting an aluminum backing on the hull for the rub rail rivets to better secure to I think I probably should look at making some cross bracing which means drilling some holes in the hill for attachment points.

Update Tons of rain

Update Tons of rain

Its been raining for almost 3 straight weeks lately and I am not complaining cause we need it but the boat is starting to fill with water dang I wish I had the time to raist the bow supports and lower the stern. Too much to do before I leave for Christmas Vacation. Will have to get the jack out and atleast drain the water currently in there and recover. Atleast the portable carport provised some protection just not enough since the boat is 18.5' long and the carport is only 20'. maybe its time to put the cap back on until I get back to it when it decides to stop raining. Although the rain is probably good to keep the fiberglass dust down its not so good with electricity. Dang why cant we live in a erfect world where everything works together and not against each other. but then it wouldnt be a challange and we wouldnt even have to work on our boats cause they would last forever.

You can always use Nylon Staps to keep the hull from flexing.;)
