Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

NM, I just found them thank you for all your help. I hope that changing the coils/power pack will fix it. And I will keep you posted on the tank test.

Yeah, Actually I wish that I knew about these guys a while ago. Looking through their catalog it seems like they have a lot of parts that you can't get your hands on through OMC anymore. Thanks for the sierra info. I would have gotten them because they are cheaper, but I won't now, and anything I can buy CDI I will.

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

Just one question, that CDI part actually looks quite different than my coil. Like, it only has one wire instead of two. Is it ground in the body somehow or what.

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

yeah... they make the housing out of plastic now - id imagine itll last longer that way because it wont expand and contract at a different rate from the resin like aluminum would - the killer for these is heat so keep that in mind should work great though CDI makes some killer stuff -so does Mallory marine but they dont make parts for this engine
heres the diagram for it and the install instructions look at it and see if the wiring looks right for what you have -should be fine though they dont make garbage

http://www.cdielectronics.com/InstallSheet/113-1726.pdf
theres also a company called tech2o they make good quality coils and igniton parts but in this case theyre a little more expensive and their parts only carry a 1 year warranty

Just a thought about your statement that it runs properly after it locked up. Have you checked the condition of the flywheel key?

good point daviet .... itd be worth the five bux to go ahead and change it ..... while you ordering from marine engine.... should only be a buck or two and it may HAVE sheared....

You know what, I was actually wondering the same thing. So, if you wouldn't mind, where exactly is that on the parts diagram, because I can't seem to find it. I thought this might be worth replacing after firing the engine so many times while diagnosing the problem.

So, as for the coils, that means they are grounded through the coil casing, because the old one has 2 wires running out of it, while those new ones only have one.

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

Ok, so I found it, but one more question. If the flywheel key is sheared off, would the flywheel not just be free spinning? I mean, is there a way to test this by moving the flywheel and "feeling" that it is still where it should be, or is the only way to find out to remove the flywheel and see? I'm just asking because I've worked for three weeks to get this motor running right, and I don't want to take the chance of messing my timing up just to find out the key is in good shape.

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

no because its pressed on by the flywheel nut and i could see where if the engine suddenly stopped that it might spin back to where it should be
yeah the only way to check it really is to pull the flywheel
your timing will stay the same if you pull the flywheel it doesnt effect anything ... youll need a harmonic balancer puller and 3 grade 8 bolts and washers for your puller youll have to look but the one on my ' 73 50 hp are 5/16" fine thread and im pretty sure theyre the same on yours get em 3 1/2" long (lowes has em in the drawers for about a buck and a half each) (dont use the ones in the kit theyll break or bend and then youll have a mess ) if you have one use an impact to take the flywheel nut off and to tighten up on the puller take it slow, tighten up on the puller and the tap down on it with a hammer while holding up on the flywheel when it comes loose youll think you broke it .... scares the crap out of me everytime so keep you hand on it at all times

buy or borrow a torque wrench to tighten it down DO NOT use the impact to put it back on the torque spec should be in your book or you can find it online

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

OK So I tank tested it and it runs great, like a brand new motor. Just have a couple of questions.....again.;)

First off, it's kinda smokey in the tank at idle. I kicked it into gear, and it seems to go away. Just was wondering if this is normal. the closest thing I can describe it to is like looking at a tank of dry ice, that;s kind of the smoke "sensation" I get off the water. The smoke is white. The ration for fuel/oil for this motor is 50:1....Right? Just wondering.

Second, after it runs for awhile, when you shut it off and turn it back on, the starter spins the flywheel for a half second and then locks....almost like a dead battery. Thing is, battery is not dead. So, does it need a new/rebuilt starter solenoid? Or is it normal Operation? I mean, it'll do it twice (quick spin, lock. Quick spin, lock) and then it will fire up. I've never actually had to back off of the key. Or is it something else like....vapor lock?

Just was wondering on these couple of things.

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

yeah man thats about right the tank kinda holds the smoke in it ...

sometimes the starter just cant overcome the firing of the motor ESPECIALLY if its getting good spark and fuel but your battery may be on its way out take it to a parts house and have it load tested if your that worried about it ... if it tests so so itll be ok for a little while but plan on replacing it how many cca and ca is it? i like at least 700cca and 850ca puts less strain on the starter and makes it last longer

thats the right mixture (they dont call em two smokes for nothing lol)

so did you end up changing the keyway?

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

No, it looks fine, actually....

After running tests and looking at certain parts, we can't seem to find exactlry why it came back to life. I thought it was a bad coil causing the miss, but coils just don't suddenly come back to working order.

We think that maybe when we pulled the spark plug and caused the fuel lock something that we missed gunk wise in the carburetor/fuel system (hard to believe as it is that we missed something) got sucked through/out fixing everything.

That's the only thing that we can come up with that makes sense.

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

......yess! I think I finally am

I have a little kicker motor, a 3.9 hp merc. Got it running and mounted today. So easy compared to the bigun!!

Now I have two supposedly good motors, so I shouldn't have to be towed back to shore.:)

Well, I go out Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

Ok, so motor holds an idle and in gear. great, we are making progress. Now onto another question.

She won't reach WOT. If I am alone in the boat, it is a veeeerrrryyy slow gain till she finally plains, but even then she doesn't get the RPMS she really should have. I am getting full throttle, and my spark advance is going fully to the stop screw, which btw, I have NEVER touched during all of this. So, theoretically it should be in the right spot. The funny thing is, I trim her out, and she picks right up with three people in the boat.

I'm wondering about prop size and motor location first off. What is the proper prop size for an evinrude 75 horse motor pushing a 16 foot tri-hull. It is actually not that heavy of a boat. I realize that this might be something you need more info to help me with, so let me know what you need to know.

Second off, the PTT that came with motor was beyond shotskies, so I replaced it with a cmc pt-130 trim kit. But when I put the boat in the water and remove the cowel to adjust stuff, the water is almost splashing into the bottom where the power head sits. Is there a spec on how far the motor should be up? I'm almost wondering if its too low and creating drag, so when I do trim it I kind of halfway fix the problem.

She gets up and goes to full throttle in a tank, so it must have something to do with the boat in the water, location of the motor, or size of the prop. Please......Once again....help me:rolleyes:

Re: 75 evinrude carb adjustment

does kinda sound like youve got too much pitch on your prop is it three or four blade?
im thinking a 12-14" pitch prop would be ideal
look on the hub of the prop around the nut and give us the numbers on there
the cavitation plate should be even with the bottom of the hull an inch lower or higher is ok
take a pic from the side of the boat of your engine setup make sure you include the motor and the side of the hull

youre right though this thing should really fly with 75hp on a 16' trihull have you tried it with just you in the boat??
my 15' center console has a 60hp 3 cylinder with a 14"pitch prop if thats any kinda comparison

oh and take a pic of your prop
