Hey Trooper any new updates? Looks good so far, before you know it you will be putting new wood in.

I was thinking about you and progress also...

Thanks for the kind words Burglary5%.

BoatNut and Bear_cuda...

I just returned from a 2-week business trip. Waiting for daylight to hit so I can go out and finish up the bilge floor and removing the inner skin on transom area. Doing a little research before heading out.

I hope to be ready to get the wood this weekend.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I woke up at 5:30 AM this morning...excited to get back out to the boat after my 2 week hiatus. Did a little reading on the forums here, took in a little surfing on Lowes and HF. Decided to run to the store in order to give the temp a chance to get a little higher than the 28 Degrees it was when I got up. Picked up a couple of new blades for the Oscilation Tool at HF also a couple more pairs of gloves and a new set of goggles. The pair I have leak and fog up too much. Decided to hit Lowes too. Had my mind set on a new suit and a dust collector. While looking at the vacs I saw they had a 12' hose. I thought it was the same diameter as the hose on the vac I bought, was only 1 1/2" not 2 1/2". So I spent about a half hour when I got back fabricating an adapter from all the spare parts that were included with the long hose. Didn't take too much thought, was able to make a coupler that looks like it came from the factory. Now I have a 16' hose for the new shopvac! This way I can leave it outside the boat and still reach every nook and cranny in the hull. Worked out very nicely.

It was like 1:30 PM before I got to get in the boat. Didn't think I would have enough time to get much done before dark. As you may recall, I had to get the bilge area de-balsafied and rip the transom wood out.

3/4 of the bilge area was a cake walk. The remaining 1/4 was a bear....

Down in the bottom, there was alot of this....looks to me like the resin was over cooked? There is alot of this on the starboard side from the foam redue that was done also...very hard and brittle.
DSC00797.jpg

Got the skin off the transom...as you can see the wood was very wet, to the point that water drained out of the bottom when I was making my cut with the OT. I never did found it, but I swear I saw a redworm in the transon when I knocked the rotten wood out.
DSC00798.jpg

There was a layer of CSM on the wood where it lays against the hull. Flapped like a piece of skin when I got the wet wood out. I would say it was that way when this screw hole was sealed with slicon, see how it spread out. These were the holes made for the fish finder, so doubt they were from the factory. I suppose the delamination happened after the transom got wet.

I really didn't think I was going to get this far today. Worked 5 hours in total, no breaks. But I got the transom wood out! Upper half was a real pain to get out. I hammered my chisel between the hull and that layer of CSM I thought was disconnected all the way up. Wrong - It was connected fine up higher. Let the chisel spread it, sounded like rice crispies when the fibers started snapping. Let it got for a while and kept moving the chisel around, but it finally came out in the one piece that was left.

You know what this means, right?

Time for some grinding.
To start, I am just going to knock all the high spots down where all my cuts were made. Once I get that done, I will start making templates for the stringers and the deck. Then I will get my wood and cut it out, dry fit it. I will not be doing my final grinding until I get my materials for doing the fiberglass. Then a rough/scuff ...followed by a good vacuum and acetone wash.
Then I will be ready to glass! Can't believe I am so close!

hey troy! glad to see ya made it back.
i know what ya mean on the transom wood. like you said to me, "those pics look eerily familiar"! lol
a redworm wouldnt surprise me....i had termites.

i found a 7" grinder on ebay for ~$30 to grind faster, and keep from burning up my good dewalt 4".
it helps, but still a slow process.

great progress! we're all rooting for ya...and waiting for more pics. ;)

You can wrap a scotchbrite pad around the exhaust vent port things of your grinder and that'll prvent the glass dust from getting in there and killing your tools. I would definitely use a cheap grinder that you don't love, regardless. Glad to see you back!

I just read your thread and just want to say WOW. You are really going to town. I could really relate to alot of the methods you are using. I was wondering if the money tree produces seeds? I can't seem to get one to grow. You read my thread so you know i'm working on aluminum. I have much respect for you guys who work on fiberglass. I am looking forward to your progress.

The way my arms feel I seriously doubt I could hold a big grinder for any length of time. I'll use my HF cheapo 4.5" for now. I did cheat and get 5" pads for it though!

And glad to be back, thanks Allen.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Absolutely gorgeous day here in CenLa today. (Central Louisiana)

I had planned to start my grinding today....but....

I think somewhere in my subconcious I was not ready for the itching just yet.

I decided to clean out the shed. Not sure who's thread I was looking at yesterday morning, but they had done the same thing recently and got me to thinking I needed to do the same.

Not actually working on the boat, but it does help with getting to the end of the project....

I think you will all agree.....

I agree with the shed cleaning.I cleaned out all of mine and didn't realize how much room I actually had in them.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I have a couple things that are worrying me about the grinding process.

1. When I suit up my goggles fill with moisture from getting too hot and I cannot see. This happens very quick when the sun is out...today looking at 74 for a high. (Been thinking of putting a small shopvac to use pipeing air into the suit for ventilation)

2. With no air flow inside my enclosure there will be so much dust that I will not be able to see what I am grinding (I have tested a small area and found this out)

Anyone ever try products like these?
Curious if they will work as well as they appear to in the videos, especially since I will not be keeping the grinder completely flat as they do in the videos.

You might try this...

boat_grinder_034.JPG

Remove the filter from the vac, place the entire vac in a cardboard box, cut out three sides and tape air filters over the cut outs run the hose in to the box and seal the opening, Turn on the vac, Seal the box. then plug in the vac. A friend of mine uses this for dry wall sanding and it works great. Have you tried spitting on the inside of your goggle lenses. It really helps with fogging. Also a tiny tiny bit of liquid soap rubbed on them will help as well.

that's the beauty of grinding on the bottom....you dont have to hold the weight; just hold it steady. ;)
but, yeah, it does get heavy. i didnt think about that part. im used to it cause this is another item i use at work fairly often.

the problem with the goggles is the lens fogging up due to lack of ventilation. there are a few products for use as anti-fog, but i've only seen them at specialty stores (weld supply, tool rental, etc.). i've tried woods suggestion of spitting on the inside, and it works rather well, depending on humidity and temp, of course, and seems to do just as good as the specialty items.

Glad to see you got to work on her again. I need to clean out my garage also because it looks alot like your "before" pics of your shed. I know what you mean with the goggles fogging up and getting covered with dust, I have been having the same problem. I might try the shop vac filter like wood suggested.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I decided I better 'Man up'.....

Been grinding for 5 hours. Only stopping to drink water, and try and cool off a little to keep the fogging down. I will try the spit/soap trick WoG. I like that setup for the vac also. I can see where that should increase the air volume abit.

Allen - there was a time I would have no problem at all with that. I used to do physical work for a living, not so much now.

Boatnut - I think the shed cleaning was well worth it. I'm sure you will too.

I was having so much fun with the grinding, but I think I will call it a day, or atleast lunch...

This was the first area I tackled. See the roving going over the chines? I suppose I need to take that all the way out?
DSC00806.jpg

I have a few tricks up my sleeve. For the fogging lenses I have been sucking the moisture out with the big shop vac.
If I had some long tubing I think I would just do this...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Grinding is a bummer, I actually just came in from doing some myself. Once the grinding is over with it will be all down hill from there. I wish I could have some 70 degree days to work with :D
