Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I only had enough gelcoat to do two coats...I need to add the blocks and want to have somewhere to get the 1708 I will cover them with connected to the deck...so...I left a little on the sides...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I have about a gallon or less of layup resin left. I started with a half gallon of resin today. Could I have added some resin to the gelcoat in order to have more? I have about a qt of gelcoat left, thinking about adding some resin to it so I can put a finish layer on the deck. I forgot gel will remain tacky until it is sealed from air, using wax in my case.

Opinions?

Thanks Fanny, it is getting close...

While I wait on someone with more knowledge than I have, I decided to do a test...

Took a capful of gelcoat, mixed with a capful of resin...added some surfacing wax, about 4 drops or so...mixed then added some mekp...again like 3 or 4 drops....then poured it in a tub and let it cure. Color looks fine, it appears to be curing correctly.....i have a pt of gelcoat, may add a little resin and go do a final layer on the deck, otherwise I can't walk on the deck till I get some more gelcoat.

Troop, I' m NOT a gelcoat expert by any means, but...from what I have gleaned from research and the guys here on the forum I would not think it would be a good idea. Gelcoat IS poly resin but, it has a different formula and has binders etc that keep it from becoming brittle like the normal poly resin. Mixing the two would seem to possibly mess up the properties of the Gelcoat and make it not perform as it should. Again, I have NO experience or first hand knowledge, just passing on what I have read and heard.

Great looking progress!

Just throwing out an idea, never tested or even know if it is at all any good...

Could you give the deck a dusting of baby powder to ease the tackiness and then when you are ready to continue Gel-coating, you could just wash it out with soap/water/Acetone...???

I was close to doing it, but my test sample was tacky on top and slick on the bottom, and was pliable like paint. I decided to just use the pint, with a short mohair type 9" roller and put it on thin, hopefully it cures hard.

Thanks for keeping that okie eye out for me wood.

If my thin coat doesn't do what I hope it does, that might be a viable solution...

Thanks GT...hope you got so e rest before trying to do any sanding, saw you have had a busy day/night.

For sure! Almost hard to believe it is there...looking like a deck and all :)

Starting to think I Should wait to flip it. Not enough resin left to do the blocks, don't have anything to make a stand for the hull yet either.

Hey Trooper,
Just getting caught up with the thread. You should get to the doctor ASAP. Don't play around with your kidneys. I have too many customers that are on dialysis and some of them or really sick. You don't want to be one of them.

The work on the deck is great. I am glad to see you were able to get so much work done. Really is looking like a boat again.
The wood on the transom for the flip looks like it should hold up fine. The eye bolt you have looks like the one I tried to use.
Be very carefull if you use it.

Man you need to get to the doc and get checked out. There are too many people here that want to see you finnish this boat.
Thoughts and prayers are with you. Take care of yourself.

The last layer of gelcoat I put on late last night is still tacky. Guess there was no way or time for the wax to make it to the surface. I really should have waited on putting the gelcoat down till I had enough to get it done complete. Oh well, it will get worked out eventually. Thinking about pulling the cap today.

Let it cook in the sun today...well sun this morning...rained a little this afternoon...tree fell on powerlines down the street...no power for a couple hours...

I was going to pull the cap this morning, but thought I had better wait till I get those blocks attached to the side of hull...so...you know me I was bored....

I had some foam left over from doing the deck..filled a box with plastic....poured three batches in it....let it cure...(really the foam was done a few weeks ago...added it for dramtic effect..)

Took these tools...and went to hacking at it...

Wife was bored with no electric in the house, so she came out to watch...and take a pic.....thanks dear....

That looks like you've got the making of some real one-of custom consoles:)

Most excellent possibilities maybe a totally custom doghouse

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Well, it is way too tall the way it is now...not really wide enough...but think I can make that work...

DSC01270.jpg

Need to cut the horizontal line up to the top corner radius...then I think it might be OK....still some finessing that needs to be done...but you get the idea...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I saw a dog-house for sale on Gulfport, MS craigslist the other night. If you have any interest, I'll see if I can dig up the link. Just thinking, you might want to try and find one like that - as opposed to building one out of wood. I know other folks have done that and it has turned out great, but I just worry about how heavy it will be when you need to move it out of the way to check things out. The one on CL looked to be in pretty good shape.

You going to fiberglass this to make a negative mold or will you just glass it and scrape out the foam?

Great pics BTW. Love the Bimini top. It that PVC Bimini bows I see? lol
