Re: 79 SS18 Project

the semi circle key, how is it initially placed back in the slot? I assume round side IN, flat side tapered to the shaft, slide the wheel on, etc.

If so, how and when does the KEY move into locking position?

I can pop rivets, drill holes, cut wood and metal, paint, do wiring, but I guess me a dummy with steering:rolleyes:

You got it...BTW the only reason I know how to reassemble steering on boats is from making every possible mistake last spring:D

If you manage to get L-R correct the first time you will have me beat.

Nice! I just installed my bow mount as well and tried it out this weekend. Works awesome. Mine's only a 43 pound and it works great so that 24v will probably plane your boat :p

Re: 79 SS18 Project

That looks like a nice trailer

Some hoop jumping, but results.

My 79SS came with a Holsclaw Dual axle, and didn't fit my eye or needs. Not a roller type user, drive-on bunks the way to do it in my opinion, so, I needed a Buyer before making a swap.....

I figured the market on a Holsclaw limited to a restorer/collector of Vintage glass, and that buyer showed up, and the Holsclaw sold, but, put me in a scurry to find the replacement. After what seemed like hourly CLIST monitoring and using other hunting resources, this EAGLE popped up.

The seller was nice enough to take some careful measurements before the hour ride to see it/purchase it, and lo and behold, the bunks were positioned right under my stringers and right next to the strakes. SOLD. The only other concern was the deadrise on the bunks, and considering old Star's have a curve in them versus straightline, a shim would be necessary, but turned out unneeded.

The boat sits nice, and it doesn't rest on the keel line anymore like the Holsclaw. The old trailer had mini rolls by the chinelines, so I decided to make some 60" bunks, with some assistance from my friend Alan, a world-class welder, and buddy Frank, a former BASS/FLW competitor.

The EAGLE is an all welded 2x4 tubular construction so Alan made the stud posts from my template out of SS, welded the plates, and we built them. They will be custom installed/welded with boat on trailer after they dry.

That's Frank in the picture pretending to be an expert

Starman, your project is a huge inspiration for me! I have very similar ideas for my boat as far as the rear casting deck. I think you are trying to get the best of all worlds like I am thinking. Part bass boat, part walleye rig, part tube pulling machine. Looks like a very versatile boat. One question, is that the original woodgrain vinyl on the side panels or did you buy that some where? It looks awesome!

yeah, i'm gonna have to agree... i love what you did with the rear deck. ive been hung up on what to do with mine but now its pretty much decided... though my splashwell is a different design, im going to try to build something similar to yours... one question though, i may have missed it in the thread but what type and where do you have your fuel tank?

Re: 79 SS18 Project

My buddy Alan came by and welded a keel roller and my 2 chine bunks onto the Eagle trailer, pics later. The keel roller shouldn't come into play while launching or retrieving, nice to have just in case, and it allows me to attach the transom saver the better way.

The two 60" chine bunks aft should help take some of the transom load as the main bunks are supporting the hull under the stringers, and also help center it when driving it back on.

The whole job was done in the rain. You can see the arc in front of the wheel. The two chine bunks sit right where the rollers did on the Holsclaw trailer.

The vinyl is original, about the only part of the interior that wasn't rotted out??

Thanks

Decided to winterize and get ready to tuck the old bird away. The new trailer and the prospects of another rehab project forces me to keep her outside, shrouded in multiple layers and underneath a section of pines that will provide additional coverage from snow and wind.

Engine fogged, lower unit lube change, all batteries removed, charged, and stored, and multi-covered starting with ridge posts, original vented Sunbrella cover, secondary tarp cross-twined, then "tent-wrapped".

Have a lead on a 1982 SS16, no engine, for a winter project? Still considering.
