been away from the forum for a while, life is busy, but not busy enough if i am looking at another project.lol

I am looking at a new project boat, it appears to be in really nice shape inside and out
on a good trailer .
thats the good.
the bad is :
the #1 piston broke a connect rod and poked a hole low down in the block
I think the hole is well below any water jackets,, appears to be single wall...

2 questions

1 why did this happen? (guessing over revving)
2 I have welded lots of cast and have never had problems with welds i have done
can i take the bit that was poked out by the rod and weld it back in,,, change the
piston and rod and be good to go?

any input would be appreciated
matt

I wouldn't do a weld on a block, but that's just me.

I can't help with your questions but you can use a 250 out of a truck (or a car if you change the cam).

Just make sure that the block has the "ears" for the front motor mount or fab them.

I don't think it will be as easy as patching the block and stabing another rod/piston in it.

If a rod let go and punched a hole in the side of the block,,, I bet you will find more damage once you open the engine up, cylinder bore hammered, maybe the crank journal got buggered up, valves?

Re: 80's starcraft inline 6 with a broken connect rod.

well a little update on this project, ended up buying this boat, was going to pass on it even after
the guy dropped the price, said the only way i will be hauling it home is if i got it really cheap
enough said about that.lol
has a nice stainless steel prop (quick silver)
nice shoreliner trailer with aluminum sub-frame and tandem axle with new tires:)
appears that there is even brakes on it too that are not hooked up.
new upholstery inside, over all not bad..
the bad is the leg is old with the skag broken off
steering is really loose
tilt goes down but not up wiring problem jumpered it and it works
and motor is seized solid

Now on the topic of using a truck motor i have found 4 to pick from and will be going to look
at one on the weekend, hope it will work, 200 sounds like a fair price for a good block?

more later

Just the block or the whole engine? $200 for just a block seems steep to me, though I'm not up in Canada. If it's a machined block, mangafluxed, bored, decked, etc. that might not be a bad deal. If it's just an old block, you could stick another $200 into it quickly.

Since the old engine broke a rod, I would want to get a complete short block (block, crank, rods) if not the whole engine. Actually, I'd tear down the old engine first so you know what you are dealing with.

If it's from a truck the cam should be fine.
Not sure if the heads are different.

$200 CDN for a short block is not bad at all! Check that rotating assy out very closely.

Going nuts would be a 1350hp monster from Mercury Racing. However i do understand using what is not broken.

if you want to wake up the engine's torque, there are a few simple performance mods for the old I6, especially regarding the crappy intake port designs. check out inliners.org if interested. specifically look up "lump port conversion". if it wasnt for the rh engine mount, I would suggest the 292 in place of the 250

want to keep it simple and i seen some place that the 292 isnt very good on fuel and there is the
potential of heat issues?

Re: 80's starcraft inline 6 with a broken connect rod.

the 292 has a different RH engine mount that would make it a PITA to swap. it will use a bit more fuel than the 250, however that is only because it would be providing more power. and since your sitting on the worlds largest radiator and have the same raw water impeller that is on any Alpha, no need to worry about heat.

Keeping it simple is using another 250.

Re: 80's starcraft inline 6 with a broken connect rod.

so much for keeping it simple i picked up a 250ic that is said to be a good runner
for 150 but it doesnt have the holes for the front motor mount on the starboard side
so it looks like i will have fabricate a bracket of some sort for that side..

has anyone made one of these brackets and posted before??

Re: 80's starcraft inline 6 with a broken connect rod.

post a pic of the right side of the engine, you may have picked up a 292.

here is a link to inliners post about brackets that you can purchase for installing a 292 in place of a 250 in a car. you may be able to buy and modify.
