I have an 81 Evinrude 25 hp (E25RCIM). I have the shift rod bushing and o-ring on order. I assume the gasket goes in the bottom of the hole where the bushing goes, but where does the o-ring go? Also, is there some sort of punch I can fashion to get the bushing out, without having to pay $200+ for the OMC tool? Your help is appreciated.

The o-ring goes underneath the bushing. Send an email to (forum member) F_R. He makes the bushing removal drive tool for a reasonable price.

So it would be installed between the gasket and bushing as shown on this parts page, correct? Out of curiosity is the bushing, cut out for a lack of better words, to receive the o-ring? If not do you just re-install the bushing with the shift rod in place, so as to keep the o-ring from moving around. I'm sure once I receive the bushing, my question will be answered.

Thanks

In order to remove the bushing, the shift rod needs to come out and the o-ring, seal, and bushing re-installed as per the diagram.

Understood, but what keeps the o-ring from moving around when reinstalling the bushing.

I have the tool on order from F_R. Very reasonable pricing. Thanks to Jasper for the service manual.

Re: 81 Evinrude 25 HP Shift Rod Bushing and O-ring

Question answered as to how the o-ring is supposed to stay in place during re-installation. The bottom of the bushing does have a recess to receive the o-ring. Per the service manual sealing compound is used to hold it in place. I had to take the lower unit, less the skeg housing, to a machine shop to get a broken machine screw at the water bypass plate drilled and tapped. While there I asked them to go ahead and remove the bushing. In order to remove it, the guy used a solid peice of steel rod to punch it out, and even fashioned another punch device to re-install. So I guess now I'll have two removal punches. Just waiting on the new bushing, gasket, and o-ring to arrive so I can re-install. Thanks to all for our help.
