Re: 81 Evinrude 25 HP Shift Rod Bushing and O-ring
Question answered as to how the o-ring is supposed to stay in place during re-installation. The bottom of the bushing does have a recess to receive the o-ring. Per the service manual sealing compound is used to hold it in place. I had to take the lower unit, less the skeg housing, to a machine shop to get a broken machine screw at the water bypass plate drilled and tapped. While there I asked them to go ahead and remove the bushing. In order to remove it, the guy used a solid peice of steel rod to punch it out, and even fashioned another punch device to re-install. So I guess now I'll have two removal punches. Just waiting on the new bushing, gasket, and o-ring to arrive so I can re-install. Thanks to all for our help.
