Howdy,
I was on the lake the other day, and noticed that when I went to max throttle, the engine started getting rough, then soon after (20-40 seconds) the overheat alarm went off. When I took the cowling off to let the engine cool off, I noticed some oil in the bottom of the engine compartment. I've attached pictures:

If you look straight underneath the starter and to the right, there's even a little puddle of oil. What concerned me most is that it looks like there's metal flakes in the oil. I was told the engine had been bored a couple of years ago, so I'm hoping those metal flakes might have come from residue left in the bottom of the compartment from that.
This isn't normal is it? I'm pretty sure (90%) the fuel/oil mix was correct, if that matters. I'm only a little mechanically inclined, so I'm writing to see if this is a problem, and if it is, is it a simple fix:rolleyes: , or should I take it to the mechanic:(?

Without pics, I'll just take a guess here...we will deal in facts when you get the pics up...
For starters, the block was not likely bored mounted to the mid section..in fact, the pans around the bottom must be removed to remove the powerhead. The residual oil is not uncommon unless it's a massive amount..everytime you tilt the engine, some fuel/oil mix drains out and when the engine is down, the fuel evaporates and the oil is left. The possible metallic look to the oil would likely be filings from the starter when it engages the flywheel-guessing here...and I'd have to go with waterpump problems VS. a fuel problem on the over-heat....
Let's see what the Guru's have to say.

Awww man, and I tried so hard with those photos too :( Maybe this will do it.

Another question, is how can a fuel issue cause overheating? I've had the water pump changed, and that obviously didn't seem to fix it. Good call on the starter thing though. That was just changed recently, and there's a good chance its getting broken in, causing metal shavings.

If these pictures still don't show up, I apologize. I've posted them online here: http://picasaweb.google.com/shep0247/BoatProblem

My apologies. I was working so hard to get those pictures on there, it completely slipped my mind. The model number is E150TRLCI. (1981 Evinrude 150)
Thank you for the help, and I appreciate your patience.

Re: 81 Evinrude Excess oil in engine compartment.

Was the float-level properly set?
How about jets....perfectly clean? and what did you use to clean the insides of the carb bodies with?
(sorry for the many questions)
how about spark plugs...what brand and number?
Fuel/oil mix? what ratio are you using?
How did you do the break-in after rebuild? If you didn't do the break-in, how much time did it have when you got it?
Water tube not aligning with top of waterpump housing can cause problems....
Do you have any way of knowing the piston brand that was used in the rebuild???
Please...take your time answering these questions, and if you get time, check the paint on the top of the cylinders and heads....is it bubbled?
Also check the temp probe (one on each side of the cyl banks recessed into head)..are they pooched out?

If the hose from the bottom of the airbox to the crankcase came off, you will have an oily/fuel mixture leaking into the front of the lower cowl under the bottom carb. This is a minor issue-unrelated to the overheat. I'd probably take the thermostat covers apart on both heads and have a look inside. If you haven't-replace the thermostats (always a good idea on a rebuild.) Check the nylon pressure relief valves to see if they are heat deformed and may not be functioning properly.

Re: 81 Evinrude Excess oil in engine compartment.

Hey guys,
Mystery solved... I read your posts, and realized that a lot of the things you were talking about were way over my head, so I swallowed my pride, and found a mechanic. Since I know some of you guys like to hear the final resolutions, here's what he found, and the info is a little old, so if it doesn't make sense, it's probably my fault, not wrong information from him.

1: The water passageway above the cylendars was completely clogged with calcium. He took pictures of it in this state to show me how bad it was. I don't know how water got through there at all.
2: A previous overheat had messed up the "deflectors". He showed me pictures of those too. I don't know what they're supposed to look like in the first place, so I couldn't tell how bad they were. I do know they looked all black and crusty though.
3: He gave me 6 little 1-2 inch black tubes that he had replaced that had swollen and flattened. he said they used to be round and water was supposed to pass through them. By looking at them, I don't know how water ever got through them.

With all of those clogged waterways, shouldn't the motor have overheated sooner? It seemed to run fine as long as I didn't push it too hard. Either way, the mechanic lake tested it, then when i picked it up, I did too, and it seemed to work pretty great, so I've got no complaints.

If its really important to you guys, I'll post pictures up. It was kinda a hassle last time, so if you're really interested, just ask, and I'll try to get the "problem" pictures up.

Thanks for your time guys. Hopefully I won't have any more questions for a while.

It's good to hear of a good mech. So many people do not have your good fortune. Make sure you reward the mech, and not just who he works for. JMHO.

run a comp check after ward to see if the slight overheat hurt any thing
check all your plugs freq. to make sure the head gasket was not damaged in overheat .
you may have missed the old bullet on thatone good luck bennyb
