Re: My Big project for the winter. 81 Glastron SX-190 -UPDATED 10-17

well we have reached the end of Day three. This was the hardest day so far. I got the transom plate taken off and spent the rest of the day getting the transom removed. I got to say that it was worse than I thought. The rot went up one of the stringers about four inches and the port side floor has a little rot. I had to take out all the foam for access tot he floor and stringer area. Next weekend I will take a wire brush and the grinder to the inside to get ready for glass.

One question. I noticed some stress cracks on the inside of the gelcoat, but not the outside. How do i go about fixing this?

So here are some pictures. remember you can see all of them by clicking the link in my sig.

Here is the rot.

So everyone says not to use silicone on boats but the plate was sealed with the stuff. This is from the factory!!

CIMG0358-1.jpg

What is this white stuff? Mold?

Almost done

Me after two hours of grinding. Check out the mold on the house behind me. We have had so much rain the house is growing mold!!!!! Time for the powerwasher.

CIMG0381.jpg

All better!

CIMG0386.jpg

I found an ant nest when taking out the foam. Looks to be sugar ants.

Foam, Foam, everywhere.

So, what did you all need to do to take off the transom plate? Just the 6 bolts and pull it apart?

I'm at the same spot on my project.

Well the engine had to come out of course, but yes, six bolts and a hard tug and it was in my lap. The hard part was using a hammer and chisel to chip away at the transom wood.

Re: 81 Glastron SX-190 Transom and Engine- LOADS OF PICS-UP 10-18

Well here we are, the end of another weekend. So what did i get done. well it does not seem like alot.

1. Purchased a new Engine stand from northern tool (That place is the coolest)
2. Stripped the engine down
3. Sanded all the floors to get rid of the glue and other residue
4 clean out the interior.

So I think I am ready for the reconstruction. This is where I will need your help guys. I am a little scared of what is to come.

I really need to get the boat off for a quick resto on the trailer. I have ready alot of posts about using foam from Northern tool, but the boat seem s really heavy and I cannot get it to move. I also have a slanted drive and I am scared of what will happen. Input?

I am going to use West products to do all the glassing.

Here are pictures from the work this weekend.

I cut the floor out where there was a little rot on the port side.
DSC09459.jpg

I cut the stringer back to the motor mount for safety. I really did not have to go back that far.

DSC09458.jpg

I found that the blocks that the ski ladder attached too were completely gone on one side. i think that is where the water was coming from that rotted the transom.

DSC09456.jpg

This is the top of the casing from the ski ladder mount. The only thing left was the glass.

This is what is left of the wood from the skit ladder mount

All clean and ready for new wood.

I feathered the glass down to the floor. this is where is started to stick. The other stuff cam up in my hands. All god now.

Here is my new engine stand.

This engine is perfect, but I want a 350. How much should I ask for this longblock?

Looking pretty good!!

About the engine, it's worth what someone will pay I guess. Do you think there is a good market where you are for it? Most people are not willing to pay a premium for used stuff.

These marine engines seem to bring a premium here. it sure beats a core the core charge.

I have a question about the engine. Do all engines have a spot for the petcock drain?

Also do all cranks have this bolts protruding from the crank? I seem to remember
the end of the crank not looking like this.

CIMG0360.jpg

Do I need to have them use a special crank?

The end of that crank looks just like a standard chevy crank to me, with some studs installed in it. I'm sure you can just put studs in the next engine. The petcock drain, yes most engines I seen have the spot for them, you may have to take out a plug and screw in a petcock though.

Did you transom assembly on the inside have two wires coming out right below the steering arm? Mine does and I am not sure what they are. They are not trim senders as mine is inside.

Also, you are lucky your transom is rotted...mine isn't and it is going to be a pain to get out :(

Sweet boat! I have the same one, but an 86 with the 4.3 I have wondered about putting in a 350 I would love to but I'm not sure if its in the project right now! My boat is rotted the same way as yours but my stringers are going too, up near the ski locker.

Ill start my own thread, but mine rotted in the same place on the transom, right at the rear ladder. Looks good! Keep up the good work!

I think its required to pull the motor, did your cherry picker pull all the way out? It almost looks too high to clear the boat.

What are you going to do with the rear transom? It looks like three seprate parts, or is it all one piece?

I am stoked that someone else is
doing the same boat as me! Sorry for all of the questions!

Drive has to come out due to a leak.

The last floor job someone did has some dry glass.

The boat is dirty with bugs and needs to be gone through.

I am going to redesign the interior anyways.

The inside of the transom has no glass, only paint.

so....I am this far might as well stringer, transom, floor it so I can boat for another decade and not have to worry about it.

The cherry picker worked great. It was close but it worked. The transom is one piece.

Post some pictures of your boat.

ah, that makes sense!! Sorry bout being dense!! my drive also leaks like crazy!!

The cherry picker worked great. It was close but it worked. The transom is one piece.

I thought of using it either on blocks, or taking our bobcat and digging out a trench to lower the trailer ( my landlords suggestion :D ) But we will try to make it fit, before any extreme altercations take place!

Post some pictures of your boat.

Ok, I don't mean to thread hyjack, but here goes:

I bought her two weeks ago now, runs great but there are many plans in the works.

New interior vinyl
Fix broken speedometer
re-glass in new transom eye.
New stereo (the two lounge seat base are going to be a sub box)
New electrical with a dual battery set-up and hopefully a stronger alternator.
all new stringers and rotted wood replaced.
Bilge coated
All outdrive serviced
Wake board tower ( I will be welding up a tube stainless or alum. tower, depending on my calc's and cost!! )
trolling motor (big big big maybe, more like probably not though)
and a full trailer rebuild.

I wish it was in the budget to do a new 350, but I think it would probably need a new stern drive as well, so that's pretty much out right now on my college budget. (already proving that a boat is a hole in the water of which you throw money!!) I wont be starting for a few weeks, I need to get my street bike done, get my dirt bike ready for one of my bigger trips of the year, and trying not to have a large amount of projects out, and to minimize the clutter!! :D

its not too bad, but it needs a lot of work. I will start a thread when I get to start it. I am chomping at the bit, but my finance is helping me keep my projects together, and in line! I thought it would be a great winter project for me to stay out of trouble, but I think I just got into a ton of trouble!

what are on the sides of the boat where the ski step mounts to? I took the step off, and the spedo transducer off the transom and water started pouring out all of the holes, what is behind the ski ladder though? I looked at your pics and couldn't really tell? what are your eventual final plans for having a finished boat?
