Frisco,
I would not recommend that great stuff in a can.
After following your thread for several months, I know you don't want to rush, just to get it done. I would order the foam and do it right.
Just my opinion.

Ok. I will get the pods built and order the foam.

After looking at what I have to do , I think this needs to wait until next winter to do this. I have to remove to many things to make it happen and take off to much paint. It would make a huge mess in the boat. I think I will pop a couple of holes in the aft deck and pour some foam in there.

Also I found some really nice marine foam billets that I can just glue to the side of the hull for buoyancy. They are expensive, but they will work.

Air floats better than foam and an air tight compartment is coast guard approved. Maybe you could seal up some ply boxes of air and bolt them in temporarily?

Well that did not work either. It would require to much foam and would look like crap. I will order some of that foam and pour it under the deck and just pray it is enough.

Well I think i figures out how to add the flotation back in. I bought a bunch of the pink EPS foam from HD yesterday to make billets for flotation. That looked terrible and at 2:00 am this came to me in a dream. This is sort of like what I was going to do with the wood, but I did it with the foam instead. I basically used the pink foam to make a cavity that I can pour the 2 part stuff into. Once I do that I will paint the pink stuff the color of the engine bay.

I might have had one over sight though. Does anyone think the 2 part foam will eat the pink stuff?

Video Soon!

Skin the pink foam with a thin layer of glass cloth. This will give it some protection from impact and abuse. It will also keep water off of it and if the pour in foam finds its way through the pink foam it will be stopped by the outer layer of glass.

I just might do that, but I have to use epoxy as the poly resin eats it up.

You could go as light as 4oz cloth and get the desired result as it is non-structural and you're only trying to keep water out and chunks of pink stuff from littering your bilge.

Edit: check the foam closely. Sometimes it has a thin plastic film on it that has to be peeled off before applying the epoxy and glass.

Hey frisco,
I'm about 90% sure that the poly urethane foam won't eat the pink foam.
I will give you a positive answer tomorrow night. I'll run some trials at work tomorrow if I can find some of the pink stuff at work.
I know that if you put some plastic inside your forms you would be fine.
I have one other suggestion for just a little insurance, I would add a little temporary wood bracing on the outside of the forms to insure they don't come apart.
I also like the Idea of putting a layer of glass over the outside to protect it from impact over time.
Overall great idea.
Keep us updated.

What about making "modules" out of fiberglass that would bolt in. Fill the modules with foam. Then you could remove them if you needed to access the engine.

I envison making up a fiberglass shell with an open top, then fiberglassing a top on. cut some holes in the top to put the foam in (that foam will expand a LOT) and let the foam setup in the block, then bolt in.

Of course you may need to fiberglass some mounting boards to the hull to screw brackets into to mount the blocks. You want the blocks to stay in should the boat become swamped.

I can tell you a story about not putting the plug in and getting out in the lake and having to stop, shut off, and dive in and put the plug in.........It was cold too.

What's your fuel tank made of? I haven't really thought about the ethanol problem, and I can't remember if my tank is fiberglass or aluminum.

Well I spoke with John over at Aero Marine Products and he said that the foam will not hurt the rigid foam that I have in place. So I ordered the 8 Cubic foot kit from him. I am leaving town on Thursday for five days so I will not be able to try it out until later next week.

Nice looking compartments, I don't know about the expanding foam eating the pink stuff, but the idea is great. keep up the good work.
