hey guys have a starting/battery question. i just got my boat and tried multiple auto batterys from 550 to 850 cca to start the motor and no matter wat battery i use i can only get about 8 seconds of strong cranking before its too weak the turn the motor fast enough to start. i even tried with the charger on it at bout 35amps and start mode 200amp and the same thing happens. when i put the charge on any battery the mter on the charge stays at about 15-20amps even on the 200amp mode is that how it should be or is my charger not working. what should the gauge on the charge read and what is it showing me? thanks so much guys

First thing remove the plugs and turn it over.If it turns then do a compression test.If it doesn't turn then starter might be needed.J

as i stated before it does turn over and has compression becuase it was running last week now i cant get it to crank long enough to see when it wont start before it kills the battery even with the charger on it on start mdoe.

Re: 82 chyrsler

Just because it ran last week means nothing.Do the compression test. Then if that is ok then check the starter. It could have broken brushes. The magnets came loose.Lot's of stuff.
There are certain steps to follow. The compression readings should be within 5-10# of each other.
I was trying to help a fellow one time and he wouldn't follow the procedures. He ended up buying a starter 2 new batteries a solenoid and then he was gonna take the lower unit apart because he thought it was binding????J

hry compression is good and the starter is good. motor cranks fine but the problem is it only cranks real strong for 8sec at the most with a fully charged battery and charger on it set on start mode. the problem is why is drawing down the battery so fast? thanks

If your compression is good then the starter probably needs new brushes.Take it apart and inspect. These are a simple unit.If the brushes are wore, then get it rebuilt. They can test the magnets and windings.J

Re: 82 chyrsler

hey thanks again. i am also thinking its the starter. i tried starting it today and after a very short period of time i went to remove the battery cables and they were hot as hell and burnt my hand. im going to get a starter from ebay for 65$ and try that. thanks
