so far everyone talks about using "Peanut Butter" to fill gaps and create fillets, but havnt heard much about BondoGlass.? is there a reason not a lot of restorations use this wherever possible?

I've read a couple of posts about using Bondo and another marine filler. Seems like were split on whether is okay to use or not. Some said it will hold water, others say no, it won't. I think it'd be okay if it was sealed (glassed) well. I thought about using it, but it's a little spendy compared to making your own. It's basically resin, glass and talc. So far, I've had good luck with making my own. I just wish I'd have dropped for the milled fibers instead of cutting up CSM scraps. But it works.

Funny you mention that, I was thinking about doing the same thing. But, I got a bag of aerosil the other day when I picked up another tub of resin. That first 5gal. didn't go very far. I figure I lost close to a gallon, over several different batches, when it kicked before I was done working. I make smaller batches now, about a pint at a time, and have a couple of pints poured up ready to add the MEKP to. It only takes me a minute to add the catalyst, stir and keep going.

I can't select the correct picture, but on page one of this thread, it looks to me that you cut a small section of your splashwell to access the transom before you removed the cap. is this true?

Thanks

I did in this picture you can clearly see I tried not cutting the cap at all. I tried breaking it loose, BUTTT>.....

In this pics you see I gave up on playing nice with the cap and cut that top piece off so I could get a recipricating saw in there, then took a hammer and crow bar to pry the cap up.

Thanks WTR. I've been tracking all of the bass boat guys trying to follow right behind and make progress myself. I plan on pulling the cap this week...

Now i'm interested in seeing how you will repair that cut, because I have to do something similar. My splashwell has a crack back there...

No Problem, got the rest of the deck fitted tonight, and test fitted the tank and batteries

also talked to my fiberglass guy and I should have 5 gallons of resin soon to start wetting all the wood before I can start gluing and glassing...

thanks, yah i have been busy, just a lot of cutting and re cutting, Im glad I did it this way though, make sure it all fits before glassing, and once I start I wont have to stop to cut more wood.

But im thinking instead of screw Im gonna use 3/8" wooden dowels for everything, anyone have any opinions on that alternative?

I was thinking about dowels too. But the logistics of all the clamping got to be a little too much for me. I bought some stainless, yes stainless not coated, deck screws. Got em' at HD. I'm planning on drilling and then dripping some resin in the hole and then screwing and then glassing over everything. I'm still trying to decide if I want to lay a bead of PB on top of the stringers, or PL. I know I'm still over thinking this, especially since I already have my next project lined up! (1992 Ranger!)

And, good idea to dry fit everything. It helps figuring out the best way to get it back together. I practiced clamping my stringers. When I had everything the way I liked it, I undid it, made my filler and went to town. Outside of one bad batch of putty (see my thread) it went pretty well. It has cooled down a bit here, so it is a little easier to work.
