thanks, I am a steel detailer. so drafting is what I know and do for a living just with heavy steel instead of wood. same concept though, measure, measure, measure again, and keep tollerances to a 1/16" and everything should fit.

Just a question for you WTR, how big of a budget are you working with? And what is the cost to do fiberglass yourself for a boat restore? I am looking to start mine in the next few weeks. Thank you

One more thing WTR, I saw that you did some reinforcement of the transom area. What size engine is your boat rated for? I have a boat that is rated for and 85hp but has a 100hp. Could I safely run this motor on this boat with the proper preparation to the transom area?

well to easily answer your first question, ill say that there is no budget, just a good saying....im building a 30 thousand dollar boat 30 dollars at a time..... Ill also mention that if you already have a lot of tools then it will save you the most money. so far Ive calculated over $300 just in new tools, (engine hoist, grinder, recipricating saw...) in comparison Ive only spent about $150 in materials so far.

my boat is rated for a 150, and thats what I have, the transom redisgn wasnt as much of a "reinforcement" as it is more for a more evenly distributed force into the hull for better "hole shots" and overall stability.

thanks, yah i have been busy, just a lot of cutting and re cutting, Im glad I did it this way though, make sure it all fits before glassing, and once I start I wont have to stop to cut more wood.

But im thinking instead of screw Im gonna use 3/8" wooden dowels for everything, anyone have any opinions on that alternative?

I had thought of that. What went through my mind was, screw and glue everything, then bore holes one screw at a time and then plug with glued in dowels, cut flush and then glass. After 120 screws, I figured that with the PL adhesive and glass as well as the screws, I was probably already better built than original. I'd say go for it if you want to engineer it to the level of crazy, I can't imagine it would be better or worse than using screws in wood.

I've been telling everyone that I'm taking a 300 dollar boat and building it into a 30,000 boat for years! Of course, It'll probably still be worth 300 bucks when I'm done with it :D I'm sure there are things that those who know better have cringed when they've gone through my restoration thread :p

If she were mine I would bevel the hard edges of the srtingers, bulkheads and boxes. this will make your fiberglass layup schedule much easier. You do some wonderful and precise work. Keep her up!

I agree I don't have a router, but even if I did I remember the results on the edge of ply would where less than ideal. So instead Ill be using my Harbor Freight tool with sand paper to bring the edge down and round any sharp corners.

ALsSO GOOD NEWS I JUST GOT MY RESIN IN SO ILL UPDATE WITH PICS TONIGHT after I apply resin to all the parts before glassing in place.

Layed out every piece of wood and rolled on my resin to seal the wood. Before doing so, I marked with a pencil to know where the stringers where below the deck.

********morning after note***** DO NOT LET resin that poured over onto the concrete cure! it will glue your stringers to your drive way*******

my fiberglass guy hooked me up with a 5 gal bucket of peanut butter, just add hardener... it was time saving to say the least. Spread nicely and filled gaps like a champ!

Nice work WTR! :D Filling the stringers and floor in like that brings me to a question out of curiosity. How are you making sure the cap join line around the boat is of the correct dimensions so the cap goes straight on gap free? Thanks.

Morning after note*****I noticed some small cracks in the PB after curing overnight, reminder DONT OVER APPLY HARDENER!, loooks like it cured a tad too fast*******

it probably wont, but im sure ill get it on, and burn that bridge when I get there. but seriously I left the hull on the trailer so that helps keep the shape so it dosnt warp so bad. Also I used the back piece you see me PBing into place as a referece to set the width of the top of the hull.

Re: 84' Stratos resurrection***PICS***

Hello folks
I'll try to answer all the questions.
I did provide drainage, by not tucking the plastic into the corners, That created a void for water to flow through. You could also lay something along the stringers to create drainage, like PVC pipe or anything to create a void and then just lift out the foam and remove it. Then replace the foam. Just make sure that your stringers are straight up and down, if the top of your stringers are closer together then the bottom you will create a die lock and it may not come out.
I just used Rustoluem oil based enamel from HD. (Cheaper then Bilgekote.)
I did both sides of the stringers at the same time. I did not use any type of dam because I wanted the foam to expand as much as possible. Just start on one end and pour the foam close to the end of the last pour and allow the foam to push itself toward the open end. If you have any small gaps you can mix some in a cup and fill them in. It's takes a little trial and error to get the split right.
As for leveling it, I just used a sheet of 3/4" plywood about 20" wide and 4' long covered with plastic. I would pour the foam, put the board across the stringers ( overlapping the previous pour) and then stand on the ply. Didn't take much weight because didn't create much pressure with one end open.
Any high spots I did have went away pretty quick with my belt sander.
Just remember to seal any areas of the foam if you break the foam skin.
I hope this answers all your questions.
Have a great Day.
Bob

Hey Brother, nice progress! I've made a bit, just no pictures. It's raining here too, so, I'm on hold for now.

What post is that from, about the pour in foam? I wonder what you would seal the foam with?
