Which method did you like better? Hole in deck, or plastic lined plywood?

well I didnt have to cut holes in my deck, the picture above is borrowed from another thread where a guy poured foam like that. personally I took my approach because I didnt want to even think about cutting into my brand new deck AND knew I could make sure the foam filled evenly all the way through.

if you look close there is some spots on the left and near that back that didnt fill in, shortly after the picture was taken I filled them and made it all nice and even.

Great job with the foam WTR... it's looking even and permanent. Your pipe drains are a great idea. :)

You will be MUCH happier with the US Composites 2-part foam. That "Great Stuff" ends up absorbing water over time and isn't nearly as structural. I use the US Composites 2-part in all of my Radio Control Boat projects and it works terrific.

Doing a great job. Can't wait to see more....

I AGREE with 2 part us comp foam being more structural. that stuff has a real real real strong bond with anything it contacts, and holds the boat together with a very noticeable difference in the flexing of the hull even before I started putting the deck in.

as for "GREAT STUFF" absorbing water....well im not going to argue, but I will state that it does not. Not only that, Ive seen it repel water better than the 2 part foam from us composites.

WTR,

I just read your entire thread. Very nice work. Man you sure do have a lot of boxes and such. Great rebuild. I look forward to seeing more. Keep up the great work.

new deck glued in place, I went with "GREAT STUFF" Big Gap Filler to seal in the side and act as a filet, so I can glass the deck to the hull with a uniform transition.

No screws in this boat. 5/16" dowel pins@ 4" on center and PL premium only. My theory is that screws, over time, act as drill bits that wauler out stringers giving moister a nice little pocket to hangout.

Wow! Looking great man! You're gonna have a sweet rig to be proud of when you get this finished! You're about at the point where it'll start getting more fun! Things start coming together and it finally looks like you're getting somewhere!

I have been watching your progress and your giving me alot of motivation to start working on my 17' 83' rajin cajun. im afraid she needs about the same attention your boat did. its coming winter so i figure thats about the best time to start(work being slower and all) One question i have for you is how much time has this project taken from start to where your at today, not labor hours. thanks and keep it up!

To best answer that question I would refer you to the post dates. But to kind of answer your question...I picked the boat up on May 25th of this year. Every post Ive made corrilates to the same day I actually worked on it. Any dates in between are days that are null and void :)

for me personally time hasnt been the issue, money has. If I had $1500 dollars or so I would have bought everything I need by now and put it all together by now. But im working with about $50 or so dollars every pay day (biweekly) to afford parts and supplies. But like I said early in this thread, tools have been 50% of the bill so far.

To know for sure I kept track of my time using this thread and receipts from everything I bought from day one....the day will come when I post those numbers :)

Awesome job spending your money wisely.

That thing will take a torpedo strike when you're done and keep going. :)

Has this whole project been with the boat on a trailer? What type of bracing did you use to keep the hull straight with everything removed? To insure no wraping and that the cap will fit back properly?

definition of Irony.... Cadwelder yes, it was done on the trailer, I used ratchet straps to hold its shape.

as for a sad update - as of last night the cap doesn't fit, but I will soon post why with pics and offer some solutions to my dilemma.

just wondering how much of the foam did it take to do your boat....getting ready to do mine and seen you replaced the foam and was wondering how many pounds it took

Had no intention of be a bearer of bad news, but I've done several of these and when you go all the way down to a bare hull it is near impossible for the hull to retain it's shape without stabilization braces or still being in the original mold (which of course we do not have). I worked for Norriscraft in Tennessee for a few years back in the early 80's and learned a lot in a short time. You have done a great job, but with nothing to support the original shape you could have a worst mess than when you started. I truly hope you can come up with an easy fix. Be sure to check the hull alignment to be certain it has not developed a twist, also. I'll be glad to help in any way I can.

I used 2lb density foam and it's going to take two 16lb kits from US composites to get all the foam I want. But it only took one 16lb kit to do the under deck foam.
