84 Suntracker pontoon pressure gauge

I have a 1984 Suntracker Pontoon boat that came with this pressure gauge. It's not hooked up. At the back of the gauge there is a place for a tube hookup, but no tube. Where on a motor does this tube get hooked into. I have recently received a 1977 150 Mercury and wonder if this pressure gauge can be hooked into this motor. But, I can't find a location to tie into. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It simply hooks into the tell-tale hose with a plastic "T" fitting available at in the plumbing department of any home improvement or hardware store. Or you can do it like this (this a Merc 3 Cyl but the concept is the same.)

Thanks for the information. I was curious since my old 1984, 85 hp Mercury outboard had an attachment at the front of the motor right above the top fin. I couldn't find this on the 1977 model. Thanks,

That would have been for the speedometer...

No, I don't think so so since my boat came with a paddle wheel speedometer, and the pressure tube was hooked up here when I got it from a Mercury Dealer. Are you telling me that the Dealer has made a mistake? I find that hard to believe.

Pitot fittings are included on many engines and those are for the speedometer. That would not measure engine water pressure. Pressure on that fitting is related to the speed of the boat and has nothing to do with the water pump. My walleye boat has three speedometer pickups. A paddle wheel (generally works with the locator), a separate pitot, and the pitot on the engine. Yes -- the dealer very likely did make a mistake. Not many pontoons are fitted with a water pressure gauge but many are fitted with pitot speedometers. The tech saw the tube (for the water pressure gauge) and simply hooked it to the engine pitot. Remember, everyone has a bad day now and then and even simple stuff gets done wrong.

Yup, they did. That pitot is for the speedo. Your water pressure guage would have read fine but it wasn't measuring the right water pressure.

Thanks, Now I have lost all my faith in my Mercury boat dealer. And I thought he was doing a good job. Does this mean that I'll have to check with you guys on any work that he has done to verify he's doing it correctly. I contacted him and he said "OOPS". Wonderful, just wonderful.

Everybody makes mistakes, to expect perfection requires perfection from you in everything you do.

And no it wouldn't hurt to double check on things, just be sure to not be upset when bringing it up to whoever did the work (you'll find that you'll have fewer shops that will be willing to deal with you if act like they are stupid for making an oops).:eek:
