'85 20 HP Johnson water pump failure

Hey guys...Pops and I were out today and all of a sudden the motor stopped spitting water and got hot. I think it is safe to assume the water pump stopped working.
I shut it down pretty quick and we got a tow back.
What does an impeller/water pump change entail?
Seems like there are 4 maybe 5 bolts keeping the upper and lower together.
I imagine if it is like my mercrusier, we could split the upper and lower and it should be right there.​

Thoughts??? Fingers are crossed that we didn't overheat the powerhead......Any signs we should look for?​

you can look up parts diagrams here, gearcase, mid section. there is a 1"x2" plate on the side of the midsection with 2 screws, remove the plate, this is where the shift linkage connects. remove bottom bolt, notice there is an indentation, on the shift shaft, the bolt goes thru the indentation when reassembling. now remove the bolt hold the lower unit, and it drops out. the kit contains an o ring, that goes on top end of the drive shaft, don't forget it. simple repair.

Thanks again. Think the motor is shot? We immediately removed the cover and did not run the motor again.

usually not. do a compression check. should be around 100 psi, and equal. if not let us know.

Not 100% sure, but the shift rod disconnect may be a hex nut behind the water intake screens on that one. If it isn't behind the oval plate, it's behind the screens.

Looked for a parts diagram with no luck...maybe I am doing/searching something wrong. ​
