Re: 85 Capri...frightening project boat

Here is a small update...

Installed:
-raw water pump impeller
-rubber seals for the copper inlet pipes
-water pump shaft seal.

The housing bracket for attaching the pump had two really poor helicoil repairs each of a different size. So I spent some time pondering a solution. I wanted to go inexpensive. No time sert, welding, etc.

Bought a hex screw, rounded out the hex so it would slide inside the housing reverse direction. That's it. I just secured it from the other side with new spring washers and hex nuts. Done.

Hopefully these repairs will eliminate the major water leak at the pump... I'll find out on Friday when I have time for a test run.

I also filled in some worn down spots that developed at the transom exhaust outlet with some JB Weld. I know lots of folks here hate JB Weld but it works good for certain applications.

It should help to slow down the thinning of the outlet where the bellows connects. It looks like a nice resting place for water to just sit there hence the eating up of the outlet wall.

Sorry, no before picture, but the bottom on the outlet was corroded to half the normal thickness.

Devcon is more structural than JB.

For those of you that remember following this thread, I thought I should update you. I officially gave up on this project and have no regrets. The most satisfying part of the project was seeing the hull get destroyed at the landfill. I sold anything of value on eBay and craigs. Took a loss, but took it has an expensive lesson. See youtube video made from my phone:

I moved onto a new project that is smaller in size and more of my skill level for a first time project. It's a 1972 14' Crestliner Stinger with an original 40HP Merc outboard.

I had it out on the lake the same week I bought it. I couldn't be happier...I'll share pic's in a new thread when I get them. It's a cute little boat. I really look forward to doing some stuff to it over the winter and next year.

Sucks you had to crush her. It took a lot of glue and duct tape but I think I've got her.

I think you made a good decision. Glad to hear you recouped some of your costs by parting it out.

The 14 footer sounds like a perfect first project. There is a lot to learn, and its easier to learn and do on a smaller boat. Glad to see you put your money and time into a project that already has you out on the water!
