That looks like a nice fit! I take it that that is the old Johnson on the floor behind it.
What size engine was it originally set up with?

That should make it scoot. Mine was set with a 90 VRO and I am hoping to get a few more years out of it.

Re: 85 Crestliner 16 Rebuild

I wonder if running the 90hp had something to do with putting extra stress on ur transom?? I think the 90s were quite a bit heavier. What kind of top speed can you get? My first thought was to buy a "refurbished" Johnson 90 from a rebuild company, but after a lot of internet research, they had TONS of bad reviews and peoples horror stories dealing with the company

Re: 85 Crestliner 16 Rebuild

I bought it last fall with the need to refurb from day one so I haven't put it in the water yet. 90 is the max capacity per the sticker and in the Crestliner Archive pages. When I was hunting I found almost all of them were set with 90s. It is a heavy engine and it seems a lot to put across a 10" tall x 2" thick transom.

The VRO has a bad reputation so the first thing that I did was to remove the VRO pump and install the std Johnson 2-cycle pump and will run premix. My old Starcraft SS had a Johnson 70 and it was a great engine.

Ready to remount the motor this week and button things up - making progress. I still need to put the interior together but things are getting close.

Finally together and done ...... for now!

Replaced transom. (2" marine plywood, glued, screwed and epoxy)
Rebuilt transom housing, bench and motor mount.
Replaced all fuel lines, fittings and sender.
Rewired and added new perko switch, bilge pump and breaker board.
Removed VRO pump and replaced water pump impeller and replaced cylinder head gaskets.
Reinforced trailer winch mount and added spare plus replaced wires and wheel bearings and seals.
Cleaned absolutely everything that I could reach and removed and refinished teak.
Added removable ski pylon.

It has been a challenging journey and I want to thank all that have helped me get this accomplished.

Hi there I see that this is an older post but I just have to say that this thread was a life saver!!! I just started my own project and the points brought up here were pretty much everything I had questions on!! I also am beginning to work on a 1978 17' Crestliner Nordic and am just about to attempt the transom. I was wondering how to go about it and extremely glad I found this. I did start a new thread on my project but not much there yet. Looks like you did a super job on yours eboat85! Hope mine ends up half as good. Here is a link to mine. Not too many photos yet as I have just started http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat...-crestliner-nordic-restore-first-boat-project (not sure how to set up a link here yet but there is the address). If you have any further advice on the transom I would greatly appreciate it!!
