Re: 86 islander

Just an update I have decided to purchase a new 150 four stroke mercury outboard. It is only 55lbs heavier than my 175 but it has a real alternator will be much more reliable and get 2x the fuel economy (I plan on cruising the Erie isles with this boat). Everything got delayed with winter and a new house, but I am back on track and should have the bracket back and on the boat in a few weeks. I guess the welding shop took me very seriously when I said that there was no rush on the bracket. Now I have so much to do to get her water ready for this spring and not nearly enough time. I was going to rebuild the trailer as well but I guess that can wait for a year or two.

Re: 86 islander.

The only year with that hull type and no side window in the cabin is the 67. We haven't been able to locate a 68 brochure so who knows. It's deff not an 80's model since it has the lapstrake hull. Also you can see it's been modified. That's a newer windshield and it lookls like the side lower rubrails are gone.

Very interesting about the year, I have a 1984 model that looks identical to that one. Only difference is the decals on the side. Mine did not come with the bow rail and the front hatch is the same color as the hull. My boat is the same color as in the posted pic. I know of two other people that have the same boatin the 83-84 era and they all look the same. I know of a fellow that has what is supposed to be a 67 and it looks like mine but with side windows. My 84 was listed as a fisherman model with only two forward seats, no side windows and no bow rail, some older info that I saw indicated the deluxe model had side windows and bow rail. Who knows for sure??????

The pic is just a web address. If your on photobucket click copy image code (should be to the right of the pic) then paste it directly into your post and the pic should pop right up when we read the post.

This motor was a demo on the shop owners personal fishing boat. It has less than 10 hours on it. (Note to self don't open a boat shop... not enough time to use your own boat) it is discounted appropriately for an almost brand new motor.

Thats a nice motor right there. My father just had a 250 merc 4 stroke put on his boat, you can't even hear it running at idle. Crazy quiet. Personally though I like em fast loud and blowin smoke

I do too, but we are planning to cruise on this boat. I really don't want to have engine problems when we are at put-in-bay or the north channel in Canada.

Re: 86 islander

So... sorry for the long delay between updates bit with the nice weather I have finally got some more things done. First, the transom bracket is finished and at the powder coaters shop. I also dug out the cabin windows to try and rebuild them... buy they are a huge mess and may not be rebuild able. So I am currently trying to figure out what to do to replace and keep them from leaking. Any suggestions?

I am building my own outboard bracket, so I am dying to see what your had made... I wonder how they figured the right height and angle to build it all with the changing motor weight.... I am thinking we want a level platform as the boat sits static in the water... but we don't want it low enough that it acts like a trim tab or brake when we are trying to get up on plane!! I dlove to hear what you had to pay to get that thing built bob

Re: 86 islander

I mimicked the transom angle and took an educated guess as to the ride height. I can't tell you how much I paid to have the bracket welded because I promised the shop owner I wouldn't. He does custom work and will work up a quote for whoever wants one on an individual basis. I don't know if I am allowed to share the shop name but he was very helpful to the process and the bracket is absolutely gorgeous. oh, and overbuilt by a huge factor... if I were to go through the process again I would use thinner aluminum.
