Jig got any pointers for drillen out old rivets? From front or back? I can't seem to keep my drill steady.

A grinder works best, grind the head off and then punch it out the other side with a nail and hammer or something similar.

If you don't want to grind, an automatic centre punch or at least a sharp punch with a hammer is required. Using either, punch a mark as close to centre of the rivet head as you can. This will prevent your drill from rolling of the rivet head. Use a slightly undersized drill and only drill the head off and puch out the solid stem.

Thanks fellas. I had to go out and get a nail punch. It's hard to believe how dense the aluminum rivets are. They really took a wacking to dimple enough to give a seat for the drill not. Got em all out though!

A gallon of gasoline and a cigarette lighter!

A good sharp wood chisel, the wider the better. Get a good sized corner cut free and then pull it up by hand if you can. The foam backing on the carpet will pull off better when lifted than trying to scrape it up.

I take it your carpeting was put on over the deck fasteners? If so, you may want to consider doing that different when you put the new decking down.

Wrapping the decking in carpet or vinyl, or what ever you're going to finish it with first and then fastening the deck panels down comes in real handy on an aluminum boat. This allows you to remove the decking without tearing up your deck finish in case you need to work on something below deck like hull and livewell leaks and/or any modifications you may want to make in the future.

Yeah man that seems like a smart idea. But what about water intrusion through the fasteners? So the past two days I stripped all of the goodies off the boat and pulled all of the decking up. I got all of the transom bolts and screws loose and I having a hard time getting the wood out. Do I need to remove the splash well? And also when I go to paint the outside should I just lightly sand the existing factory coat, prime and then paint? Rather then stripping all the paint off, acid etching, priming and then painting.

If you keep your boat covered or garaged when not in use (like you're supposed to do) you don't have to worry about water intrusion.

Take a pic of your transom setup and let's see where you're at.

If your paint is stuck good and not flaking off you can just sand and repaint, if it's flaking off it would be better to remove it.

Thanks bro. The paint is down really well. There are a few spots that are bare aluminum but just little spots. I will roughen it up some and give it a good primer coat. Ill send a pic of the transom as soon as I can.

1 or 2 rattle cans of etching primer should be all you need for the bare spots.

Post some pics of your boat with all the decking out too, I'd like to see what your foam looks like.

Sure will. I work 8-6 Mon-Wed this week, so when I get home it is dark. Ill get some pics up on Thursday. Foam is nice and dry though. I took a plug out of the back and it was dry. The wood in the back had moisture in it, but other than the surface of the foam, everything seemed good to go. I was thinking of possibly foaming under the bow deck, there was not foam there. I was thinking it would deaden the sound that I get when traveling on rough waters.

Re: '86 Starcraft Aluminum Fishmaster 16' transom repair

Thanks for all the help and advice Jig-n. I cut my floors, and transom this weekend, and used a heated garage and put three coats of spar urethane on the wood (BCX) Looks great! Dried quickly and I believe they will last me at least 10 years. I did not go the epoxy route due to the time that it takes to use, and irritability factor. Just don't have the patience for quite that much of that stuff. I'll get pictures up on here as soon as I get a chance.

did you coat both sides of your decking with the Spar? Does your decking lay on your foam?

If your decking lays on top of your foam you need to coat the bottom of the decking with the Spar too.

Oh yea sure did buddy. Got top, bottom and sides with three real nice coats. The decking does lay right on the foam. Ill get some pics. The wood doesnt look quite a nice as your epoxied wood does, but it sure has a nice sheen on it!
