Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Hey Rich I have a question for you. Hope you can help. I have started back on my Liberator and am questioning a stringer joint I made. I got the idea from a boat restoration book I have. It was a very popular book from the 80's with sound advice, I think. I copied a joint they used for connecting a new section of stringer to the existing section. I have listed a picture. My question is do you think it will be strong enough. I could scab one side but it would have to be a huge scab. I will be glassing this secton with mat, roving and epoxy. I have glassed it the new with poly up to about a foot from the joint. I figured epoxy would be stronger, plus I used epoxy to join them and on the back side where it attached to the existing glass. The pic showing the glued joint is to big, but I used thickened epoxy on the ends to bond the two pieces together. Please, anyone else chime in. Thanks Stefan

You made a scarf joint....They have worked for many years in making repairs. I would dig out the foam behind that joint so you can glass both sides....adding a splice block on the back side would help to hold that all together better..... be sure all of your surfaces are prepped well.....ground down to clean glass, acetone washed....wood coated with resin etc. You know the drill.... Look back in this thread on my splices ;)

Hey Rick, new member, have been reading through your thread, great info, we purchased a 1986 190 horizon... new engine and had outdrive rebuilt, we love the boat, just pulled floors up last weekend. bad bad rot, gonna be up to my eyeballs but am going to do the same thing you have, I have a question, I noticed you are doing this with the engine in the boat. I do not want to pull the engine from mine... how did you support the boat while structure was out? do you have any pics from the outside ?
great thread am up to page 7 so far, have learned a lot
thanks in advance
Ed

Life seems to have it's good and bad.....the good is a new job in the movie and tv industry building sets in NYC for shows like The Blacklist,Royal Pains, Boardwalk Empire etc ...the bad is my wife's battle with cancer that dropped a bomb on our lives 2 months ago.....

Thank you guys We need all the love and support. The battle against stage 4 lung cancer that metastasized to her liver and spine is a tough one.....chemo and radiation seem to be working and tests are being done this week to see if cancer is shrinking.... I will keep you all posted.
