This is really one of the best glass boat rebuilds on here. Absolutely textbook. Please keep up the great work and photodocumenting because I want this one for the completed projects forum when you're done. Again, GREAT work. This thing will absolutely outlive us all.

Ez,
I really appreciate the kind words, thanks!!!!

I managed to break off the back flow barb trying to remove it so I have to wait until the new one gets here, supposedly Thursday, to finish putting in the deck. I did manage to put in the two rear pieces of the deck and install the fuel line. To fasten the deck down I used PB on the chins and 5200 on the stringers. I predrilled the deck using a 1/8? bit, then with light pressure on the drill I marked the stringers to check there alignment. After everything was glued and screwed there was a slight gap issue at the seam of the two boards on the port side. This was because the board was cupped a little. I used a RR tie and some old trailer tires to weight it down.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Tonight I cleaned up the mess the semi rotted RR tie made on the new deck (it worked great though), sanded the joint between the two rear deck boards, PB'ed the joint between the hull and deck and put the first layer of glass where the deck meets the motor well. The PB I put between the hull and deck was a thin batch, I wanted to make sure I squirted all I could down there just in case I missed some setting the deck. I will put a second layer with more of a radius tomorrow.

Thanks guys,

Arch?it?s much easier to get in and out of now!!! I?m surprised I haven?t ripped the side off yet:rolleyes:

Getting the deck in has renewed my enthusiasm for the project, now I?m seeing solid progress towards a finished product.

LOL. I just did the rear brakes on our '09 Accord last week. I was thinking of doing a tire rotation while I was at it. Now I am happy in my decision not too.

maharg, thanks for the pics!!!! Your boat is really clean; I hope I can bring mine up to the same standard.

I should have updated last Monday completely, I only put up the pics I had at the time, a lot more got done since then....

I have since put down 2 layers of 1.5oz CSM on the rear portion, tabbed in everything shown, and put 2 layers of CSM on the port side of the ski locker.

As you can see from the pics, I moved the ski locker back almost a foot. This let me have the ski locker and the three pieces of ply coming together all sit on a cross board. The original design (see maharg's pics) made the front two pieces of wood "float" and not rest on anything. I feel this is a design improvement, but hope it does not interfere with my plan to put a rear bench seat in

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Instead of flipping the boat and painting everything I wet sanded and buffed the transom-port corner of the boat to see if I could bring out a luster and it turned out better than expected. At this point I plan to paint the cap and red strip (cant buff these scratches out!!!) and buff out the sides....

My question....there are a few small scratches on the bottom of the boat I would at mimimum like to fill in...I know it wont look perfect, but Ill have to get over it

Can I make up some PB and add white pigment and wax to it, like thick gelcoat?....proper cleaning and app of course

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Well, no responses on the PB hull scratch idea, but I?m going to try it anyway...i don?t see anything wrong with it...

I have been working on wet sanding the hull and prepping the stripe area for paint...I have even moved onto the cap a little

In the red stripe there were many small holes from a cover that is no longer with the boat...though I do intend to get a new cover I figure it will be quite difficult to match up the buttons for the old one...I used epoxy and fairing compound to fill in these holes. Before doing this a counter sink was used to prep the holes to better hold the epoxy.

Looking really good. Nice job. Really inspiring me as I plan to replace the floor in my 94 Bayliner this fall!

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Slow....ive been wet sanding the whole thing, on the second pass of 600 grit, about to hit it with 1000 grit, then buff.

I took a break from the glass work because I need to order a little more resin and mat + the seats + motor parts....I want to accumulate a few more project dollars before tackling these things.

Also, a death in the family has been/will be time consuming.

I should make some progress worth posting begining of next week.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Well if anyone has been following this project I apologize for not staying up to date. Coal mining has been extra tuff lately and need all the sleep I can get. I got swamped at work and need to recoup some funds before spending much more on this old girl.

I have made some progress...I have glassed the entire floor and fillied many of the holes in the cap. I plan to get the engine and outdrive into the basement for the winter for a rebuild and be ready for spring...i promise to post some pics of me lowereing a 400lb engine down 20 flites of stairs...my none coal mining friends dont think I can get a little engine down those stairs..they have never seen the **** i move around underground before either!!!!!

What a beautiful boat. I had one loved the way it handled and very stought in the bigger waves. The 3.0L pushed this thing about 40 mph with a 17p prop. It was really a turn key and go boat. Best of luck with your project, you'll love it when its done. I'm still kicking myself in the *** for selling it. Won't let me upload a pic but it had a great interior set up in it. Hope to see more pics as you progress.

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Well I just about fell off the face of the earth again!

About 2 weeks after my last post, in October of 2010, I was given the opportunity to move into a position at the corporate office of the coal company had have been working for. That meant a job ABOVE ground, not SWING shifts, and probably least important a little more $. The catch?I had to move 300 miles in 2 weeks.

So six months later here I sit. In Bristol, TN. The boat was in no condition to make the journey, but after several attempts to give it away I was stuck. I secured everything enough to make the trip and without incident got it into my new back yard; this one has a garage!!!

The problem was that over the winter the boat sat, unattended. By the time I got back to WV to pick it up the wheels and tires were stolen, several parts had been looted, the cap was broken in half, and other random vandalism. I was not surprised to find it this way. I was working on it in the middle of a college town that is heavily influenced by alcohol.

My spirits were broken, but not gone. I have looked high and low and found a WORTHY project, please look forward to more on that.

In hindsight this was a project I should have never taken on. Nothing against any other Glassport owners/rebuilders, they were probably good boats in there day, but I don?t think they are worthy of rebuilding. I found it ironic to see the ?should I rebuilt it or not? post when I logged on this evening. I think I will link my entire build thread into that one. I knew the smartest thing to do was to get rid of it?..
