Aw, that's almost kind of sad. I watched your thread all the time last year. Looking forward to the new project, though!

Wow guy, this was not the happy ending i was looking for. I've basically been handed down the boat we've had since i was about 10 years old, an '86 imperial v192. Love this boat, it's fast, rides good, etc etc. But have noticed it getting "heavy" and the last straw is finding the motor mount is rotted out. Theres only 1 bolt holding the motor down! After seeing prices of newer boats, and what i could get out of this one for the shape its in, i wouldn't have a good conscience selling it to anyone. Where on earth did you learn all this about glassing? Books, websites? What you did was very impressive with that boat!

Thanks peter and greenz, it was a hard decision to come too and had some harsh criticism from those that helped out with the project. I just did not want to spend the money needed to make this boat seaworthy. The motor and drive were in far worse condition than I had thought and would take a considerable amount of money to get running, plus it still needed a whole new interior. I have been able to sell a good portion of the good parts; windshield, gas tank, steering controls, manifolds, etc. and recoup most of what I had invested in the whole project!

I learned a ton doing this project and I look forward to getting my hands dirty again. I decided to keep the trailer and I am in to process of rebuilding it. I have since purchased another boat, one in running condition that I plan to use for the summer and tear into this fall and winter. I will start another thread for that one here momentarily.

Greenz - although I have done other boat and fiberglass projects in the past, this one was by far the biggest undertaking I have attempted, most of what I learned came from reading the forums here on Iboats!

Re: 87 Glassport rebuild, 16.5'

Since moving to east Tennessee I have meet a group of guys that have a shop called the Boat Doctor's. They service boats in many ways but also are one of the few boat shops in the area that will do glass work. After meeting with the owner and explaining my past projects he asked if he could have a cross section of the boat I cut up.

This gave him the opportunity to display in his shop the difference in a brand new stringer/deck/transom job and an old rotted out one. For me it provided a good parts source and reference for the future.

I thought Iboats might want some of the pics I took as well. They really help explain a lot of the process you go through in a project like this. You can really see the PB, 5200, and reason for rounding over the edge of your stingers.

What do you guys think? I was pleased to see the finished product was as well put together as I intended after doing an autopsy.

That's a useful reference Mike. I think it would be even more useful if the pics were upside down. I got confused for a minute and was like "why does his hull have a plywood core?" :p
