Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville Restore

LR,

Are you going to fill that area in the very front of the bow with foam (as it came) or are you going to use it for storage? I did not redo the bow area because the wood was all OK. However, I am about to start carpeting and thought maybe I should cut a large square out in that area. I would just tear out the foam and use the area for storage. What do you think?

Also, was the foam in your bow dry when you removed it?

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville Restore

SD,
I originally was going to just foam it back in. Then I thought it would make a nice front locker. It is actually a small space and you will be limited by the current box and how the bow cuts up quickly in it. I made mine a locker with the a lid slightly bigger than the box. you can see my framing in my thread. it's done now I am glad I am using the space. my mushroom anchor and rope fit in it nice but my big grip anchor does not.
You could dig out the foam and see if you like the size then if it's not what you think you need just cut sheet foam to fill it back in.

My thought is any storage space on a boat big or small is a good thing.

I'm a newbie and am just starting out. I live in Springfield, work in Branson quite a bit and so Tablerock is my lake of choice so far. Just learning the ropes. Going to head down there on Monday. Once again nice job!

update:

new addition to the fun. It's a joint venture with my son in law. 1990 Renken 17' Bowrider. Got our hands on it lasst Friday for a song. Towed it to the lake and was fishing by Saturday morning. Rebuilt by the prvious owner and not a bad job but he used PT Plywood for the floor and bench seat. Gonna be a small but fun project this winter. Probably start a new thread for it.

Nice wake for the boat. Merc 115 is in really great shape and well maintained. Nice to encounter a previous owner who takes care of his stuff.

The Ray is currently getting the engine cover done and will update with pics this weekend.

Hey LR,

Nice boat. Looks like fun. I can't wait for the pictures of the Ray. What are you making the engine cover out of? Will you be glassing the part that does not have a cushion or covering it with vinyl/carpeting?

I have been staring at my old engine cover for days and can't figure out what to do with it. I am torn between building a new one and glassing it so you can stand/walk on it or just reupholstering the old one.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville Restore

SD,
I just did not like my old one from the start so I have been planning all along to rebuild the engine area. I am basically just designing as I go. the lower seat boxes are done and now I am building the upper engine cover to match and to support a sun deck. Your's if it's not to bad could be rebuilt but I suspect that its not really strong enough. Since you followed the original seat boxes you could use the old one as a template and build new out of ply and resin. Fiberglass is so heavy after resin that it's to much I think for an engine cover. If you get the wood sealed well maybe you could just glass the seams. If your old cover is still good enough to rebuild just seal up the wood real good put some better frame in it and cover with vinyl.
When you get to the water you will definatly need to be able to stand/sit on the engine cover to plan accordingly.

FYI you can use water heater wrap for the inside of the engine box. Silver bubble wrap at Lowes/HD works great. cost less than the engine stuff they sell.

Hope that helps.

Vegas,
Yep I scored, actually my Son in Law scored the boat I scored a free ride and fishing on Saturday morning. I mean every Saturday that the rain stays away.
It was a hell of a deal. The amazing part is that it was ready for the water with a little work about 2 hours of just little things. I have my own keyy. I guess he's thanking me for my daughter or wanting to be in my will. LOL

Now to the Sea Ray...

Been workin on the engine cover and rear sun deck. Here some pic's of todays work thanks to a couple of hour off from work ....yea1!!

Just a dry fit for now. Will need to do some serious fitting of the panels as all sides are on an angle of some kind. when it's done there will be a sun deck across the entire stern with removalbe panels either side of the engine, Should be way cool I hope.

For now that's it. Later

Looks great LR! I wish I was good with carpentry. Are you going to cover all the areas without cushions with vinyl, paint,...?

Thanks for the idea on my cover. I think I will just reseal and reinforce it. I don't want to try to get too extravagant with my lack of woodworking skills.

It was good getting to meet you. It looks like I will be back up there in June next year. Nothing like fighting fires in the good ole Texas summer heat. Anyway, I hope you get your floor issues worked out and headed back in the right direction soon. It was nice meeting you. Does that picture make me look fat? Just sayin' (lol). Thanks, Steven

Hey LR,

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Years. Made any progress lately? Nothing here besides just trying to keep everything dry.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville Restore

Thanks for the shout SD yes I had a great Christmas and New Year. I actually took 2 weeks of vacation (never done that before) It was great. Hope you had a good one as well. I have been away from the project for a bit but will be back at it in Feb. as I must have this boat on the water by April. Not much to do but finish the rear seats and engine cover and filler with gas. I figure that all the little projects can wait till after the splash. So how is your Ray coming along?? Seems that you have had enough rain out there to float your boat right at home LOL.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville Restore

LR,
My Ray has been untouched for a few months except for some flood work I had to perform. One of our nastier storms ripped my 4 year old cover in half and dumped water in way faster than the drain hole could handle (especially since it was half clogged with crap from the restore). I am not sure how high the water got inside the boat before the rain stopped, but I am sure my glass work was seriously tested. I replaced the torn up cover with a thick Harbor Freight tarp and put a big fan inside for a week straight. Sure am glad I removed the original foam.

I will probably get back to work on it in a few weeks. I would like to be ready to go in April also. Luckily I only have a week's worth of work remaining (ha ha).
