Bob now that you said that I do recall that CSM shouldn't be used with epoxy. I'll keep doing more research.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

some of the parts that I need to start rebuilding are on their way. I started with an order of 5 gallons of epoxy from uscomposites, along with 15 yards of 10 oz fiberglass, plus three different size rollers. Acetone and brushes I will buy locally at my nearby suppliers.
Life has a funny way of getting into our way of things, but those are things that make life go around.
Hopefully next post will be with pictures of new wood being installed.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Tink:)

tinkeringwackyone,
Did I read "pic's". You no we love pic's.:p
That's funny, I started with five gallons and then another five and then 3 gallons and then another five. I think I have enough now to finish. At least I hope so.:p:eek:
The glass went the same way, more, more, more.
Can't wait to see your progress. :D
Take care.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

As I stated when I return there would be pics, so here we go.

searayproject001.jpg

First thing cut was the center transom piece.

searayproject002.jpg

I set the angle on my saw for the edges.

searayproject003.jpg

finished cut look at the center transom piece.

I gave the transom pieces 2 coats of epoxy on the back sides before PL them into place.
dry fitted the center transom piece then PL'd it into place. Before I glued them I roughed the surface with my belt sander for better adhesion.

Tink,
Congrats to you on the new arrival. Your gonna need shipmates as you are after the rebuild and it's lookin good. Yes bulkhead is the proper term for those across the stringer thingamabobs. Nice work good to see you at it again.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Hey Tink,
Congrats on the upcoming family addition.
The transom and stringers look good. One thing I would recommend that on the edges of the transom and the tops of the stringers I would round them over some. It will help the glass lay over the top. One more thing I glassed my transom in before I installed the stringers to keep it all separated. If one fails both aren't going to.
Take Care

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Just came in from working on the boat. Tonight I continued to cut, shape, sand and assemble the stringers and bulkheads. On the stringers I attached 2x2's with rounded edges for the glass to flow over. These were attached with PL and stainless steel deck screws. Even though they will be sealed I wanted SS to help keep from rusting out.

The purpose of the 2x2 was that Sea Ray added this so the decking had a ledge to set on. The deck was on this and allowed 1/2" for the tank access hatch to set one as well. I thought I would add this back into the structure.

I also made a thick epoxy resin mixture of old fiberglass dust and cut up fiberglass and used this to fill the oversized holes in the transom.
With this mixture I hope to delay any wood rot for awhile. Any screws or bolts that go through these holes will also be sealed with 4200.

you're not up to date. Sail on Tink

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Tink,
Nice lookin work so far. I also added the ledge for the deck on the stringers but I used 1/2" plywood 2" wide perpendicular to the stringer at the top. I then laminated a 3" plywood strip to the inside of the stringer for the tank hatch. It's all together now and it worked very well.

Keep on workin it's lookin good.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

yes Bob, more pics are coming. I agree pics are great.

Below is a copy of the email my wife sent me this morning. I was rolling at the end.:D:D

Her Diary:
Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird.
We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, 'Nothing.'

I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior I don't know why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.'
When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV.
He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. To my surprise, he responded to my caress, and we made love. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else.
He fell asleep - I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

His Diary:

Boat wouldn't start, can't figure it out, at least I got a laid.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

In the process of glassing in the transom. I currently have 2 layers of cloth in the center section and 1 layer on the outer. I will repeat the process again and have one piece in the center section and a piece on either side that overlaps giving me 4 in the center and 2 on the ends. I may add extra tabbing on the ends.

I am not sure what I did wrong but my second coat of sealing on my stringers does not seem to be setting up very well. The night I put it on we had low temps and Staturday was only 45 degrees outside. I am chalking it up to the lows temps we had. each day it seems to get a little better. If I have to I will rebuild the the stringers and start over.

Does anyone else get that feeling that you could be doing something better on your project or soemthing just does not feel right:eek:. I get that feeling all the time no matter what I do. Then I remember that the last time I had the boat out it was leaking water and had rotten wood that was falling apart. Maybe it will hold together to go trolling for fish at least once.:D:D

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Tink,
I too sometimes think that something is wrong or worse I have over thought something and made it wrong. I keep reminding myself to press on and just get it done regardless what my feelings are. I try to do the rebuild as best as I can with the knowlege I have or can get. Like on here.
As far as the glass set up, I had a similar issue last winter with a project and I wrapped it up in that cheap plastic drop cloth and left it in my garage for a few days. When I removed the plastic it was set up. May work for you too.

Anyway keep at it summers coming.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

tinkeringwackyone,
It it soft or just tacky? If you used unwaxed resin then it will stay tacky for a while, Which I hope you did. Waxed resin needs to be sanded if you let it set up between layers. Cool weather will slow down the curing process too.
Take care
