Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Sorry guys I haven't posted in awhile, I feel a bit out of touch. Not much new on the boat has been done due to family issues, plus it is getting to cold to glass in my shop.

However I do have good news that I have permission to take my boat to my employers shop in town which is heated and well lit. I will continue to glass through the winter and hopefully get that done before it gets nice outside.

I do have the stringers PL'd into place. I'm not quite sure I am satisfied with the clearance of the stringers and hull. The closest the stringers are is about 1/8". I may break the bead, clean it up, and use a bead of the adhesive sealing foam that you can gete in rolls, to make sure I have sufficient space, then rebead and fillet with PL. If you think my existing would be ok feel free to comment.

I do have a few pics to upload, but will have to do that later.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

I personally think your good and would not remove your stringers. Start laying out the glass next :)

The main problem with stringers and bulkheads cracking your hull is when you have larger open spaces between them. Like LARGE hulls that have so much space between them that so much flex and load is happening.

IMHO your fine Wackyone. Time for the next step.

And if I may add..if your as good with your resto as making a family..Im sure your boat will be a fine addition :) Congrats !!!

YD.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Thanks guys for the encouragement. I have finally got back to working on the boat. I have moved it into town to a heated shop. I didn't need heat yesterday as it was 70+ degrees.:D I have a question as I am in the process of glassing in the stringers, I have 10 oz. matt and curently using 2 layers of glass. I feel this would be sufficient, or should I had another layer.

Pictures to come

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Had to move the boat into town to a warm shop. The stringers and bulkheads are almost done. Using US Composites laminating epoxy resin, the stringers and bulkheads got 2 coats before any glass went on. Then when I started the glassing process I put 2 layers of glass and resin on. I'm using 10 oz. woven.

I made clamps out of 4" PVC, cut into 1/4" strips and sliced open. Using strips of wood covered in packing tape and these clamps I was able to assist in the outer corners.

a few pics of the progresss. It's slow but it is happening.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Thanks for the support all. Hopefully this weekend I can complete the stringer/bulkehead installs, and start cutting and fitting the deck.

it seems life gets in the way of things pertaining to the boat, but that's o.k.
Without the support and encouragement of all on this forum, this rebuild would not be possible, So, thank you once again.

I not sure about the layers, oops would be the one to ask about that. I would think 20oz is sufficient.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

I'm still around, been working on the boat really late, (or early) into the evenings. I have been making progress but not enough to warrant pictures. It would be like, here's the first coat of paint, in the next picture shows the paint drying, etc. etc;

I have the stringers glassed into place, along with the bulkheads. Gas tank has been fitted in place, using strips of an old tractor tire cut about 2" wide layed down for vibration support between the tank and the glass work.

I have prefit/cut the deck into four pieces. I have sealed the bottom with 3 coats of epoxy resin for waterproofing. I decided not to glass the bottom as the span is not very far, as I am going to pour expandable foam into these areas for support/strength. The top of the deck will get 1 or two coats of resin, then 2 layers of cloth for topside strength.

I have ordered bilgkote and 404/414 primer to paint the bilge area, ski locker and gas tank area. Budget only allowed a quart to get me going. this will at least let me pain the ski locker so I can install the deck.

I need to take the boat back home and test fit the engine to make sure I have the correct height for my motor mount. I am thinking of lagging in the sides with s.s. lags, sealing with either 4200 or 5200, then glassing the mount in. The original mount was just glassed in.

Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can have the deck installed, then it will time to start building seats.

Your boat is coming along really well. Did you rebuild the stringers like the factory with the 2x2 on the outside of the stringer? Thanks, Steven

Yes I did rebuild my stringers like factory with the 2x2's on the side. hindsight being 20/20 I don't think I would do that again as it was difficult to glass properly. I had a hard time getting the glass to flow like I wanted without bubbles around the bottom side of the 2x2. Possibly if I were to glass the bottom side of them before installing them would have been easier.

Learning curves are sometime difficult. :D

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Once again I am not progressing much on the boat, at least not as fast I would like. As you know other issues come up. I have been having shoulder issues which slowed me down some, as did the holidays. Tonight I used up all of my fiberglass cloth and will have to order more. Whodathunk that 20 yards would go so fast. sheesh. I am almost done glassing the front engine mount into place.

I have some bilgekote in which I will paint the ski locker, engine area with, then I will be ready to start setting the deck into place. Whooo hoooo!!!!!! The deck pieces are cut and sealed. I just need to do a little glass work around the ski locker opening for added strength in that area.

I will be looking at getting some 2 part foam for the vacant areas under the deck for flotation.

Keep up the great work guys and thanks for the support.

Hey Tink,

How short are you on the glass? I bought 50 yards of 7500 E-glass (10 oz.) for $50 (craigslist) and I have some left. If you don't need a lot, I will give you some if you pay shipping. PM me if you are interested.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Finally an update with pics.:D I am finally getting the deck installed. The back two pieces are PL'd in and setting up. the bottom of the deck has three coats of epoxy on them. I also screwed them in place with SS screws. After the PL sets up I will remove the screws, fill the holes with 4200 or 5200, whichever I have, and reset the screws.

The edges of the deck are not touching the hull, I have them setting on a strip of foam insulation and PL'd around the edges for a fillet.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Update, I'm getting the last coat of Bilgekote done in the ski locker area, once this has dried I will lay the final two pieces of the forward deck in place. I'm using PL as a fillet around the edges. I will glass the edges in with several layers of glass, and two final layers on the complete deck itself. Looking to have the deck layed in by this weekend and, if the PL has dried, start glassin it in.

The area below the deck will be filled with the 2lb, two part foam from US Composites.
