Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Last night was grinding for about 3 1/2 hours before I decided to call it a night. Tonight I didn't get anything done as we are in a winter weather advisory and I'm grinding outside.
I really don't mind the grinding so far, to me its almost theraputic in a weird sort of way.:D
I have been researching the forums and decided what plywood and adhesives are necessary and won't have to go far to get them. till next time....sail on

Personally I like grinding except for the itch and the dust cleanup. Outdoors that's less of a problem.

I think it's theraputic because you're removing old, bad material and revealing the clean, new looking "good" stuff. Same kind of idea as getting a nice haircut or washing the car.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

I was able to do a little more therapy yesterday afternoon. My wife was bringing home a movie for us to watch, fortunately I had my work caught up and it was slow so I took off acouple hours early to do some work on the boat. I was able to get another 3 hours of grinding in before I called it a night, getting ready to go do a little more before we go to the lake to work on my aunt and uncles' cabin. til then.......sail on:)

Tink,

Good job on the grinding..Did you notate or get pics during the de-construction?...What are you going to do with the stringer re-build?...I found 1/2" stringers on my 87 searay 17 BR over the weekend...Considering 2X4 replacement stringers? Your thoughts?

Thanks,Pete

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

I have a some pics and sketches as far as measurements go. I think I will recreate the stringers that were in there. 1/2 stringers with 2x2's on the top/side sealed and glassed, for the floor to attach. I was thinking 2x4's would be to heavy. The thickest would be 3/4 stringers but 1/2 will probably suffice as long as the glass and epoxy coat goes well... tink

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Went out today and purchased the wood for the boat today as it was on sale. I'm going with Arauco plywood. Was doing some checking and eriksgreen was using it. Its a nice exterior plywood that has several layers and is nice and flat. Also purchased 3 large tubes of PL premium and a large caulking gun. I'll probably need more but the checkbook tells me how much stuff I can get at a time. I don't have a deadline so things aren't such a rush rush, making it more enjoyable to work on.
Thanks to all who have posted threads and posts before me (us) and giving us the encouragement to continue to have the boats we love, or make one that we can love even more.
I need to take and drain the oil out of the engine again and drop the oil pan and inspect the crankcase, as it had some water in the crankcase when I bought it. I knew this going in;) as this boat was stored by the PO at my dad's shop when someone took it outside, got about 5 inches of rain:eek:, and the drain plug was plugged with debris, filled the boat up with water above the dipstick on the engine. When I bought it the first thing I did was pulled the oil plug and drain the water and oil before cranking it at all.
I have run this boat about half a dozen times, runs good:cool:, but I still want to look things over well:).
sorry I'm rambling..... headed out to grind as its a beautiful day/evening.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

I had great weather today as well and took full advantage of it. got the bow area wood cut and dry fitted. It's a wonderful feeling to be building instead of destructing. It was a nice change. I am not destructing as much as you are but still tearing out anything wood. I was lucky in that a lot of the wood was not rotten. still removed and replacing because it's the best thing to do. And glad to hear your project is moving along well. Hope you get her in the water soon. as for me I set a deadline for the 1st weekend in April might make it.
Sure am glad we got some good weather to work on our projects. Here in Texas i had hoped for a mid January start but didn't get started because of snow imagine that! I will update my post with new pic's of progress late tomorrow

I bought Arauco ply for my transom. It was MUCH nicer than the regular exterior ply I had previously bought for my deck. Very few (if any) voids in it. I think I've read that it may be a softer wood but I don't think I care. It was NICE stuff.

hey lr, sounds like you have about the same weather pattern we have been having up here in Nebraska, I to have taken out anything wood, everything seemed to have som sort of rot in it. The only wood I'm not taking out is the shelves on the sides of the boat (gunwhale?) otherwise its bare.

ezmobee, glad to hear others are starting to use Arauco as well. It seems to be a a decent wood, I'm going to use it for everything. I'll glass it all over with epoxy resin to seal it. sail on....tink

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Made a monumental step in getting the grinding nearly finished (its not done until the project is done). I lifted the boat and put it on the shop floor as I am to do some work on the trailer first, then I'll put the boat back on the trailer and work on it.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Just a few updates.
Pulled the trailer out and started to work on it. I removed the bunks/lighting/and other hardware and started to wire wheel the trailer. That was taking too long so I tried a a worn out flapper wheel, that seemed to work really well.

Any suggestions on paint and primer are welcomed, I have been reading other threads on painting trailers as well.
I hope my trailer turns out as well as some of you other guys'. I hope I haven't opened a can of worms. sail on tink.

You need a break to do some trailer work after all that hull work.

I'm going to go with the POR15 products but there are a ton of other opinons out there. The POR15 stuff will limit my color choices but I'm hoping for the extra durability.

I agree sprintst, durability is what I'm looking for, I've never painted anything before, but then again, I've never tore a boat apart to rebuild one either.:D I'll take a look at ther POR15 product, thank you

I picked up a few supplies today, I got the paint for the trailer(Van Sickle Industrial Primer and paint, with separate hardener)I'm going with Gloss Black, and also got some new LED lights for the trailer.

I'll head out shortly to do more work as I'm currently watching my 2 year old daughter dance to Barney, Mommy just showed up:).

That hull interior looks very very close to my 1981 210cc. Of course, my boat isn't really a sea ray any more (so little left of the original I'm re-titling it) but I kept the hull because I like the lines.. classic sea ray look.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

UPDATE...FINALLY going together and not apart. I'm not sure but I keep second guessing myself:(. I saw where the Arauco wood was a little soft for my likeing so I returned it:(. I didn't get any more yet. I also changed my paint selection. I chose to go with Rustoleum semi-gloss black with the bare metal primer:).
This weekend I have been able to finally start reassembling:D rather than disassembling, well at least painting the trailer. I got two coats of primer on and currently have two coats of color. Tomorrow night I will put the final coat of semi-gloss black on the trailer.
The carpet for the bunks wil be a charcoal-grey indoor/outdoor carpet that is one sale at Menard's. I'm ordering SS staples for the bunks as well as picking up some SS hardware to attach them to the trailer.
Hopefully this next weekend I can have the trailer back together and the boat back on it as well:D.
I will post a few pictures later.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

The weather just didn't seem to cooperate with me so I was able to take my trailer to my place of work and paint it there. I have two coats of Rustoleum bare metal primer on it, as I wire wheeled it to bare metal. (took nearly as long to do that as it did to grind the hull bare.)
seems how I had never painted with gun I didn't want to spend to much on paint if I messed it up.
Three coats of semi-gloss black. I must say I have never painted with a paint gun before. The gun I was using was an OLD Speedy gun that my father-in-law had (may he RIP) I had to tear it apart to make it work. My wife couldn't understand why I was wasting my time with that gun, but being a tightwad :D I was able to make it work.
Here a few pictures of the finished paint job as it is not yet assembled.

This tire and wheel are my spare. My dad found it along the highway. He's always finding stuff like this. SCORE:D

Progress is being made. Feels good to see something going together for a change.

Nice Job on the trailer tinker! You should add your thread to your signature. I didn't even know you had a thread until I came across it tonight. Nice shop too by the way! Can't wait to see more progress on the boat.
