Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Finished the trailer last night. Not to bad for a greenhorn.
I used Rustoluem bare metal primer and semi gloss black.
Replaced the bow stop, winch, new wood for bunks and fenders. New charcoal colored indoor/outdoor carpet.
I used my router to round the edges of the bunks so sharp edges would nt be an issue. I also used stainless steel staples on the carpet.
Come to find out that the boat now sits 2 inches further on the trailer thatn it did before due to the different style of bow stop.
The boat currently does not sit on the two middle bunks. I will adjust them with some shims. Not a big deal. Other than that shes done and the boat is sitting back on her. Here are a few pictures

Nice work you are doing......Want to do my trailer for me?? Hee hee.
I have an '87 Seville as well, only mine is white with red and is in the process of getting a new floor and upholstery. I even have the same power plant that you have.Which brings me to a special request.

The wood around the engine, separating the battery box and the live well side as well is almost totally gone on my boat and I really need some pictures of what the wood, the supports and the stop wood for the flip up back looks like.

If you have some already or maybe could take a few shots I would really appreciate it as I have to rebuild these soon on mine. Also, can you tell me if they are 1/2" or 3/4" material?

Once again great work and thanks.

Glenn.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Glenn, I can take some pictures of what I have.
I assume you are talking about the "doghouse" that is around the engine. Mine had the wood forms for the back seats. I'll see what I can gather for you.

I also took measurements before I tore it apart.

Thanks for the compliments, welcome to iboats and good luck on your project.
The wood that you can use can be 1/2" plywood as long as it is exterior rated. Meaning it has exterior glue to resist delaminating.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Thanks Tinker, any pictures of the inside rear stuff around the engine will really help.
Had good news and bad news with my boat the other night. I"ll update my thread so you can all hear of my progress.
One step forward, one to the left, one to the right and two steps back, that's the sea ray rebuild shuffle.........

Cheers.

Tinker:

Where did you buy your Arauco plywood from?
I was going to go with AC exterior plywood but from what I have been reading the Arauco is a better choice and gives a nicer finish.
Now all I have to do is find where to buy it.

Thanks.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Ahoy! (I know... not very original) Just bought an 87 Seville a couple hours ago and was surfing for info and here you are. Perfect.

Seems to be Okay, has some kind of V6 (Merc). Has upholstery rips. Am taking to lake tomorrow for its maiden voyage.

Purchase was prompted in order to replace the 1977 19.5 ft Marquis with 3.0 inline 4 I bought at auction, tok out on water about 5 times after $500 in get-it-going repairs, and then the block cracked.

The positive comments here about the model are encouraging. The Marquis is so rare its almost unheard of. Now about the 77: any opinions on how best to reclaim lost funds? Sell as a package as is with trailer, sell as is and sell trailer (tandem axle) separately, or strip them valuable marine pieces off motor and part it out piecemeal. Or find a cheap block and put all them valuable marine pieces on it and get it going again. Of course, parting it out comes with a time requirement and aggravation. I'll post the outcome of tomorrows trip.

First I gotta put lights on the trailer as it was backed into an earthen embankment when it was parked and they was squashed.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Stampeder: The Arauco ply I found is at our local Menards, I heard they sell it at Home Depot as well.

BlueonRed: Congrats on your find. As far as parting out your 77 that would be up to you. you could find a cheap inline four and sell it or try and part it out. (I have an older inline four in running condition I could sell if need be) It had a pre alpha outdrive but was running last year on my engine stand.

Vegas: thanks for the encouragement, funds have been really tight, but have seemed to get better as we have everything paid for except for the house. (dave ramsey rocks). So I hope to get some epoxy and glass here shortly.

Sorry I haven't done much but I thank everyone for keeping up with my post.
hopefully glass work will start soon as I want that done before winter sets in.

Tink.

tinkeringwackyone,
You know in my thread you said you envy me a little for the donor boat. Well, I really envy you and that shop you are working in.
The work on the trailer was first rate too.
Keep up the great work.

Tinker:

What did you pay for your Arauco ply?
Did you get 1/2" or 3/4"?

Home Depot carries 3/4 and they want $40.97 for a 4x8 sheet.
Lowes around here doesn't carry it.

If this sounds like a reasonable price then I"ll check with Home Depot and see if they can bring me in a few sheets of 1/2".

Thanks.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Tinker- I like the thread! I just picked up an '87 17 foot closed bow Seville myself a week ago. Needs complete floor/stringer restoration, but the motor & outdrive are mint (2.3 OMC Cobra), and the transom & hull are also good. Over the last 2 nights I've ripped out most of the old floor. Fortunately its rainy here in PA today so my fiberglass itch can subside...

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

My computer is down so I haven't been on, sorry.

Stampeder, I have seen the plywood on sale for 25 bucks for a 4x8 sheet of 1/2 and 35 for 3/4.
your prices are releatively comparable.

borchjb1, good job on the find. you'll love the sea ray as it handles great and has great lines. Good luck on the project.

hopefully I'll get some epoxy and supplies ordered here shortly. kind of draggin my feet as we need a heat pump installed in the house. ( only been out for five years) but with an 8 month pregnant wife at home, she may need some cool air.

Thanks guys for the motivation and the posts. It helps me keep my head up.
Plus my 2.5 year old daughter keeps reminding me we need to go boating. :) :)

Sail on all.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

Well the time has come to finally move forward again. In the process of ordering epoxy and glass. I'm thinking of 7.5 oz. glass. Is this heavy enough or should I go with a heavier matt? As far as CSM I'm not sure.
I plan on coating the wood at least twice with epoxy before installation and glassing.
If anyone has some advice on the weight of glass I would appreciate it.
Thanks all.........tink

P.S. for piece of mind I'm strongly considering epoxy.

Re: 87 Sea Ray Seville

tinkeringwackyone,
Glad to hear you are moving again.
I can't speak to the epoxy questions, I do remember someone saying not to use CSM with epoxy, I'm not sure. I do know that epoxy is 2-4 times more then poly resin.
Good luck
Bob
