Re: 89 200hp rebuild

Everything is now back together and checked out. The motor turned over about 10 times before it fired up. Should the boat have to be tilted back like it is in the water for the motor to start? It started ok this time, but before the rebuild it really had to be tilted to start. What is the correct starting procedure for this motor when cold? All of the help is really appreciated...Jon

Re: 89 200hp rebuild

Well tragedy struck the rebuild. After all of the time and effort from us and you guys. The motor was all put back together and had been run about 15 minutes on 25:1 fuel with vro disconnected. We shut the motor down and tried to start it again a couple of days later and it wouldnt start. We didnt alot of time to mess with it so we took it to the local omc shop to be checked out and timing/sync done on it. To make a short story long, the shop didnt get to it by the time I had to pick it up. When we got it back to my dad's house I tried to start it and it fired right up. It ran about 5 minutes before there was a loud noise and it locked up. Upon taking it apart, we found a broken rod and the crank jounal is beyond repair. Does anyone know where I can get a crank for this thing? At this point, I am trying to get a price together so to see if I need to just cut my losses. what do you guys think about the broken rod? as always your input is appreciated.....Jon

1989 is still a crossflow right??
I have a crank and rods from a 150. Will they work for Jon's motor?

An 89 200 is a 3 liter looper. Where did the rod break? It's very very rare that a rod would break especially at idle.

To describe it, it looks like the rod bolt broke allowing the cap to come off and the rod was broke in the middle. I assume the rod cap failure caused the break in the middle of the rod. I found a guy with a used crank for 350.00 Are there any dangers in buying a used crank or should I spend the extra money and get a remanufactured crank?

Personally I'd trust a good used crank rather than a reman. A couple of places have it figured out how to do it but not everybody. Most of their warrantys say that if the crank fails they will give you another one. No help with the usual related damage and labor. And if that one failed why in the world would you want another one just like it?

What were the bolts torqued to?

We reused the rod bolts. Is it normal to replace them in a rebuild? I am checking on torque settings. I thought that we went right out of the manual but, looking at what happened, maybe we didnt. Can 1 rod be replaced or do they need to be replaced as a set?

You can replace 1 rod, no problem. The rod bolts can be reused once but you should get new ones this time.

No Locktite!
