after replacing the seals & washers in my L/U and running a pressure test i proceeded to put the anode and retainer screws back on the housing when i stripped one and sheared off the another retainer screw in the propeller shaft bearing housing. now as you may be able to tell i need to retap the stripped one and back out the sheared one. now i know the general idea behind doing this but i ask.......SHOULD I??????
i've got a 5/16 tap and a 17/64 bit which are the next bolt size up from the one that was there what i don't have it a drill press to drill a plum hole with then again there's already a hole there so would i be able to drill right into the old hole and stay plum??????? or should i have this don't by someone in the know????

if i pull the propeller shaft bearing housing off which bolt holes do i thread the puller to there's 4 holes each 90 degrees for one another and if i do pull this off how much comes with it it looks as though just the housing would come off leaving the thrust washer in tacked.

I know that thing's been givin' you a tough way to go Marty and if it wuz mine, I'd take the bearing carrier back out and take it to a machine shop and let them deal with it. It'll cost ya a coupla skins but they're set up to do that sort of thing and, I believe, it'll be cheaper on ya in the long run.
That is, unless you can find another carrier for not much money.

g'luck & c/6
Hooty

I just read your last post and I'm not sure I understand. The thrust washer is on the prop shaft.

c/6
Hooty

Yeah, okay. We're talking about two different thrust washers. I've been talking about the prop thrust washer.

Which manual do you have. I've got a Clymers that coverd 1973-1990 48-235hp.

c/6
Hooty

it's a clymers 73-90 2-40hp i was told that the carrier me not be in deep enough which would cause the prop to wedge i think. but my biggest concern is the tapping of the stripped thread. and i think i'll be taking it to a machine shop in the morning

I'm a little slow on the up-take but now I think I see what you're up against trying to pull the carrier out.
Those threaded holes are not fastener holes but holes for the puller. Is that correct?

c/6
Hooty

This is the thrust (nr. 1) I've been asking about. If it's not in place, the prop will move to far into the housing and bind.

yes that's the one i thought you were talking about i'm pretty sure it's in right as you can tell from that pic there's really very little to mess up in putting that back together.
but i'll worry about it fitting once i get the damn thing fixed. right now i'm looking for a machinest.

Re: 89-40hp rude o/b stripped and sheared bolts HELP

you can do this fairly easily yourself. any cheap gear puller will work just put two long bolts through the holes i cant tell if it is possible to get a nut on the backside being that it is stripped you have to pull it evenly or it wont come off but with a five dollar gear puller and some fiddling it will come off easily. you also dont need a drill press to drill and tap it will follow the old hole and stay plumb. the broken off bolt is another story, be very careful if you end up having to drill it out stainless steel is much harder and the bit will want to wander into soft aluminum start with a small sharp bit and go slow try everything else first. there is a pair of snap rings behind the bearing carrier that holds everything else in place nothing else will come out and you dont want metal shavings from drilling in the gearcase.

ok, getting the L/U back today hoping to test it by days end.i've still not heard from anyone on how to re-install the bearing carrier once it's been removed.....i mean if you need to use a gauge puller to get it out i'm sure it doesn't just slid back in without some kind of force.... i've aslo not received an answer in the last picture referring to the red ring is that the outer lip of the bearing carrier??????????

i replaced the L/U then i replaced the propeller i started with the thrust bushing then the propeller then the thrust washer then the prop nut hand tightened and it's binding WHATS WRONG i know i have it back in the same as it was removed. i don't know if the bearing carrier's in all the way or not. it looks as though it's about an 1/8 or more recessed into the L/U housing and the anode is snugged all the way down to the carrier the thrust bushing sits snug to the anode prop snug to bushing but when i put the trust washer on it doen't sit as flush as you would think it should. i'd say about 1/2 the washer fits over the spine of the shaft

I don't think the thrust bushing should be snug against anything except the prop shaft. Is the prop shaft tappered just in front of the splines? Is the hole in the thrust bushing tappered?

c/6
Hooty

it's exactly the same as the picture you posted exactly. what i really need to know is. is the carrier where it's suppose to be??? the lip of the carrier looks to be just inside the aluminum casting of the L/U housing. a mechanic who can't look at my boat til june say's the carrier may not be seated deep enough. how do i confirm if the carrier's seated correctly???? can i use a 2" peice of PVC TO TAP THE CARRIER IN DEEPER??????
