Being a newbie to the world of boating, last week I bought an 18' 82 Champion F/S that has an 89 Force 150 on it. I believe the original motor was a 150 Merc. and was replaced due to a blown power head. With the help from my father-n-law we've checked the motor out and done some preventive maintenance such as replaced impeller and compression test which was pretty even across the board between 150 and 152 lbs. Doing preliminary research I found the optimum RPM range to be 5000 to 5500 or 5250 target. With that being said we put this thing out on the water Friday night to see what she would do and it ran out great , engine seemed to have plenty of power ran nice and smooth. My father-n-law open this thing up and we were flat moving across the lake. I looked down at the RPM guage and that thing was reading 8000 rpms, I thought holy crap he is going to blow my motor. Then he backed it off a little bit to where the chrysler control said gas saver and the RPM guage still was reading 7200 rpm the motor was humming nice and smooth with no strain. That leads me to the question do I need to change the tachometer or can it be recalibrated. I can't hardly belive that the motor designed to run 5500 rpm at WOT is running any 8000 rpms and not showing any signs of problems. Thanks for any help.
