martygray,

I am assuming that you have tried the lanyard to shut off the engine and it did not work?

If that's the case, you most likely have an electrical problem.

Look for fuses under the hood of the engine. I believe there is one near the starter. It is in a connector that looks like a simple wire conector.

Pull them all apart and see.

martygray,

Forget the linkage side.

If there are any, they will be near the starter, or the top of the cylinder head.

are you talking about the connector that rick points to in the pic??....and does a failer spark test mean a dead spark plug or is that just too simple?

From my other post: Did you try this? This will rule out the kill switch. This is why I wanted you to try this.

Separate the red connector and try the procedure that I outlined in my last post. You can buy a Spark Tester and a remote starter switch at your local auto parts store. All you do is hook one terminal of the starter switch to the battery side(Big Cable) at the starter, then hook the other terminal from the start switch to the other side that goes to the starter(Big Cable). You then push the button on the starter switch and the motor will turn over. In essence, you are bypassing the starter selonoid and cranking the motor directly from the battery. With the red connector disconnected, we can determine many things that could be wrong if it starts.

One more time. Disconnect the large connector in the first picture that I posted. Jump out the starter to turn the motor over while having your spark tester hooked up. This test will eleminate many of the electrical problems that may cause your problems. See if you then get spark. Did you check the fuse in the second picture as DJ suggested. Let us know the results..

oh and did the spark test done with the inline ignition tester (wich failed) tell me anything and can i check the compression of the engine in it's corrent condition. i'm going to do the bypass test first once i get a clearer idea of how to do it. but i was just wondering if the spark test i did meant anything at this point

I can't really read your last diagram, but maybe because I'm on the laptop and cannot see the whole picture. As for your numbered post:

1=Carb
2=VRO
3=Starter
4=Fuel filter
5=Starter selonoid

Look behind where you have the big red connector diconnected and you will see the fuse that we talked about earlier. Black looking underneath your Aqua square. Check that, too. Doubt it VRO related problems. It's ignition related if you have no spark..

Re: 89 rude 40hp o/b wont (electric START)????

Ok, went down to regular computer and saw diagram. One thing that bothers me is that the battery voltage seems low. May not be strong enough to get the starter going properly. But you are correct in assuming that there is no power going through the selonoid. If you have 12 volts going to the selonoid when you turn the key to start, it should start! Did you jump across the selonoid to see if the motor spins? Did you try this with the red connector disconnected to see if you have spark? Jump from red wire at selonoid to purple wire at selonoid as it is in your diagram. Large post to large post. Motor should turn over. Try it with the red connector disconnected and check for spark at that time.

One question. Does the motor turn over with the red connector connected and a good battery?
