Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

OK folks, first off sorry but no pics today. Ran out of daylight so it will have to wait till I return from work in DC tomorrow.

As you all know the inside of this boat is a real mess. so I made the decision to break out the ole gravity feed blaster and go to work on the bilge area and hopefully all that danged carpet glue residue.

I ran some rope from the bow over the stern and tied it to the boatel and fashioned a makeshift lean to with some 6 mil poly since we're really gettin hammered with the liquid sunshine here. Rained so hard last night it woke me up a few times?????

Rigged up the blaster and started on the pile of 20/40 silica sand I got at tractor supply for about 8 bucks a bag. I used medium grade walnut shells on the LL but that was on the outside and they cost about 80 a bag shipped if memory serves me. Anyhow, since it's on the inside and I'm gonna flood coat the bilge with a ton of gluvit I figured the slight pitting from the silica wouldn't matter.

Right off the bat I had a bunch of problems with the blaster gun and lost several hours tryin to get it to work consistantly. Then I got teed off and shut it down. Gathered everything up and put it all away feeling like I'd been beat. Then I remembered I was having some problems with it on the last boat and last summer I bought another cheapo syphon type gun from Home depot as a spare. Broke it out and took them both apart and managed to make one gun out of the two. BINGO! she's aworkin now!!!!!!

I managed to get the entire stern metal and about three sections from the stern towards the bow cleaned up. The blaster is gonna do just fine on the bilge area. It still won't remove the glue fast enought to make it worth my while to use it. So, looks like we're back to the ole elcheapo wire wheels for the carpet and glue residue on the sides but I'm glad the bilge is gonna clean up with the blaster.

I'm working the next few days so I'll have to just hit it when I can.

I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

In the meanwhile, I met with my other neighbor the woodshop dude and we ordered the 5 sheets of 3/4" douglas fir marine grade plywood for the deck and casting platform. We also made the decision to order a big honkin hunk of 1 1/2" sapili (mahogony) for the transom. He has a smaller piece in his shop and I beleive it's stronger than the danged plywood and I think the boat and the 150 horse Suzuki will thank me for it:D We're gonna slide a piece of stainless steel sheet material between the transom metal and wood and then install a new stainless steel diamond plate transom plate on the outside to offset and clean up the corrosion that ate thru the transom. Should be stronger than stock and look real good too.

I'm ordering two gluvit kits tonight and we're gonna keep bangin at this till other committments force us to hold!

And I'm not sure if I posted this yet but I have the metal fab guys workin on re-producing the lost cast corner bracket. I took the one that was left to them and they assured me they can make a pair that match for the boat. They should be done later in the week.

The pitting areas are about the size of a couple grapefruits but the severe areas that go all the way thru are much smaller. There is also some pitting in a couple small areas in the floor bit it looks as if we got to them in time. Here's a pic first of the transom and next of the bilge.

Looks like tomorrow when I return from looking at another boat trailer I?m gonna pick up a couple bags of sand and fire up the blaster to try and clean out the inside of this boat.

This is what we're getting with the blaster. I figure one long day and I'll have the bilge area cleaned out.

And here's a shot of one of the Festered areas on the stern.

It's actually cleaning up pretty good but there is lots of minor pitting and you can tell it's directly related to the foam. That stuff is the DEVIL:(

Again, several rivits missing/loose so we'll flood her with water and mark the leaks. Fix the rivits and flood coat the entire bilge w gluvit before we do anything else!

Looking good. A few of the limbers towards the stern look like they were clogged, there are stains left there.

Wonder if anyone out there can tell us if the chemicals of expanding foam eat aluminum?

Good progress between the drops.

Albert, every limber is clogged with foam. And that's water you see pooling up there.
And I can tell you it eats aluminum. there are many places the foam has etched into the aluminum and has done minor damage. Probably a chemical leaching from the wet foam.
But the majority of the damage is slight and I'm comfortable with the hull- if I can just get it cleaned up.

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

OK I didn't want folks to think I'm just whistlin & shufflin my feet so we got over 70 here today and I went to the supply house for more blasting sand.

After a very frustrating day with my cheapo blaster givin me fits we can now say the cursed foam in the bilge is no more!!!!! That crap was EVERYWHERE and I HATE IT!!

But now it's gone so I'm happy. I don't have much time cause I'm sposed to be in the shower. The admiral wants to hit one of our fave eat places so I'm sneekin on here to post a pic of what a freshly cleaned bilge area looks like. Still gotta remove carpet glue on the sides but that's another day:D

Found Several more loose and missing rivits so we're gonna have a PING day before I can gluvit. Thats alll for now.

I foresee a big grin after the carpet glue disappears. Great progress.

NB, I wish I had your talent or patience.
As requested, here's a larger photo (click on it) but.....I have another question.
How long is the steering cable?
Also, I've added some other photos in to an album under my profile.
Thanks.

Well, now we know what my tub would look like if it wasn't all busted up:D

I can measure the cable that came out of it. Not sure if it's stock since it's very evident the console had been removed and reinstalled.
