9.5 Evinrude Sportwin - sluggish!

Hello all! I've just accuired a 1970 evinrude sportwin 95hp.. The model is 9022c and the serial is E04143. I got this from a very trusted friend who indicates it only has 1520- hours on it. Judging how the unit looks, I would tend to believe him. He also says it hasnt' been ran in over 15 years! I took the fuel lines off and cleaned them out. Also sprayed some carb cleaner through the top of the carb, changed the plugs (did nothing with the gap) flushed some fresh gas (with SEAFOAMthrough) the lines and tank. Low and behold it started! The problem is this. The unit will run at idle but wants to stall when it is put in gear and some throttle is applied. When it does take off, it will not power up very much. it is on a 12' aluminum boat and will not plane it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like any recomendations for things I should do to do to keep this baby going!

I would check the carburetor first. The high speed jet is behind the float bowl drain plug at the very lowest point on the carburetor so that it picks up everything that sinks to the bottom.

Take the drain plug out and cycle a little cleaner through the jet with the cleaner's plastic tube. Then run some back through the small hole at the bottom of the choke bowl.

That should clear most debris. If that helps, you might want to rebuild the carb when you have time.

email me and it will send you instructions on setting the carb screws. you gat a great little engine, you are probably in need of servicing the water pump now, new impeller. before it comes apart and clods the cooling passages. thats a crumbly piece of 15 years old very dry rubber. parts available at laingsoutboards.com, maxrules.com, tell me you need carb settings. also after servicing, do a decarb with Seafoam Deep Creep. to clean the innards. did it to my '55 15hp rude and it runs like new.

BTW, To set lean- rich needle. The OMC service manual states:

" Install low speed needle, turning clockwise until needle seats gently, Do not force. Back it off 3/4 turn."

pg 3-7 OMC 9.5 Evinrude service manual.

The idle setting knob is located at the motor end of the tiller handle on the outer side.
