Hey guys,

Couple of months back I bought 9.5hp(9522c) Evinrude for a project motor(first time doing this). I have OEM service manual and bought some of the tools the forum members recommend for a beginners toolbox.:)

This is what I have done so far.

-Replaced Port side motor housing. This took many hours to reassemble all the linkages and stuff. Glad I took pictures.

-Clean the motor while I had the motor housing off, because is was it was filthy.

-bought a 1969 lower unit from a 9.5 Johnson (don't worry, I will paint it so it will be compatible...ha ha). Drained and refilled lower unit gear oil and replaced the seals. Shifts well into R-N-F

-New impeller kit installed(turned the shaft clockwise and impeller slide inside the housing with little difficultly)

-Bolted the lower unit onto the exhaust housing(took a little work, but slide in after I lubed up the water tube assembly.

- Inspected the points, condenser and coils(they all looked new) and insured that the point were gapped to 0.020

-With the spark tester at 1/4 inch, got great blue spark on both.

-Carb kit installed. Slow idle needle is a bit worn, so will have to replace that. (A new slow idle needle cost $90:()

Well, start up went pretty well, took a couple of rounds of rope pulling, but got her started. Slowly adjusted the slow idle adjust nob and its idles a bit rough at low speed in neutal, but Revs up easily and comes down nice as well.

Problem (I know finally, but I was proud of my above work!!:) , Thanks for hanging around this long!

The motor seems a bit hot after running a couple of minutes in the barrel.

-The water pump is pumping water out but it looks like a thick scattered spray and exhaust. The water is cool at first then it gets a bit hot. So the motor was shut down immediately.

-The questions that I have are
1. Is this normal and is the water pump working right?
2. Could I have a bad thermostat(I have not inspected it yet)?
3. I noticed the the spark plugs that came with the motor look new and they are Champion RJ8C plugs. ( I look up the recommended plugs for this motor and they are Champion J4C ) Can the wrong plugs cause the engine to run hot??

Any suggestion regarding this matter would most helpful!!!

Oh, I would like to give thanks, to the forum members for all the past post and the secrets files. I would not have made it this far, without doing a bit of manual reading, forum searching, taking good advice from the iboats forum guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Having done all that work, you are more talented than the average bear.
1. Normal pump operation is a spray out the exhaust relief as you mention., Should pump at all speeds, any time it is running.
2. Could you have a bad thermostat? Possible but not likely.
3. RJ8C plugs are just plain wrong. But they won't cause it to run hot.

EDIT: You mention rough idle. The 1964-65 models all idled poorly due to the extreme shake and vibration. 1966-up motors had vibration dampers to hold it steady in there and fix that problem.

Have you ever pulled the head and inspected the chambers around the cylinder walls where the water runs? I had an old motor one time that was ran in salt water and never flushed and was caked with old salt and GUNK.. might not be letting water flow properly.. and it Wouldnt hurt the motor to completely remove the thermostat to see if it helps the problem

Should check the head temps with a heat gun to see if it is actually running hot.

140 f is about right as far as I know.
That is when the stats should open.

No, I have not pull the head cover to inspect the chambers around the cylinder walls.

This is my plan:

-I will get/borrow a heat gun from Autozone(or some place) to see the engine temp.

-If the motor is running hot I will replace the thermostat and see if that helps.

-If the motor is still running hot, I will pull the head cover and check for blocked chambers around the cylinder walls.

Will try to get to this Wednesday or Thursday and let you know.

Oh, thanks F_R for the nice compliment:D

Thanks,

The cooling water will get nice and warm. The very purpose of the thermostat is to make it a bit hot.The water being cold at first and then getting hotter is a sign that the thermostat opened up.Probably if you let it run a bit longer you will feel the water cooling of again until the thermostat opens up again and then it will get a bit hotter again.
As long as it does not produce steam, you are probably just fine.
