Hey guys,
Couple of months back I bought 9.5hp(9522c) Evinrude for a project motor(first time doing this). I have OEM service manual and bought some of the tools the forum members recommend for a beginners toolbox.
This is what I have done so far.
-Replaced Port side motor housing. This took many hours to reassemble all the linkages and stuff. Glad I took pictures.
-Clean the motor while I had the motor housing off, because is was it was filthy.
-bought a 1969 lower unit from a 9.5 Johnson (don't worry, I will paint it so it will be compatible...ha ha). Drained and refilled lower unit gear oil and replaced the seals. Shifts well into R-N-F
-New impeller kit installed(turned the shaft clockwise and impeller slide inside the housing with little difficultly)
-Bolted the lower unit onto the exhaust housing(took a little work, but slide in after I lubed up the water tube assembly.
- Inspected the points, condenser and coils(they all looked new) and insured that the point were gapped to 0.020
-With the spark tester at 1/4 inch, got great blue spark on both.
-Carb kit installed. Slow idle needle is a bit worn, so will have to replace that. (A new slow idle needle cost $90
)
Well, start up went pretty well, took a couple of rounds of rope pulling, but got her started. Slowly adjusted the slow idle adjust nob and its idles a bit rough at low speed in neutal, but Revs up easily and comes down nice as well.
Problem (I know finally, but I was proud of my above work!!
, Thanks for hanging around this long!
The motor seems a bit hot after running a couple of minutes in the barrel.
-The water pump is pumping water out but it looks like a thick scattered spray and exhaust. The water is cool at first then it gets a bit hot. So the motor was shut down immediately.
-The questions that I have are
1. Is this normal and is the water pump working right?
2. Could I have a bad thermostat(I have not inspected it yet)?
3. I noticed the the spark plugs that came with the motor look new and they are Champion RJ8C plugs. ( I look up the recommended plugs for this motor and they are Champion J4C ) Can the wrong plugs cause the engine to run hot??
Any suggestion regarding this matter would most helpful!!!
Oh, I would like to give thanks, to the forum members for all the past post and the secrets files. I would not have made it this far, without doing a bit of manual reading, forum searching, taking good advice from the iboats forum guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
