9.5hp Evinrude Driveshaft comes out of lower???

Just a quick question. I am changing the impeller in a 1973 9.5hp evinrude. After pulling the pump housing and impeller the driveshaft now slips in and out of the lower unit.

Is this normal? Do the impeller and housing actually hold the drive shaft in place?

Just wondering before I put this together and have problems.

That's correct; the driveshaft will stay in place once the waterpump is reassembled.

it also stays in place once the lower unit is mounted on to the exhaust housing

I know the drive shaft stays in when the lower is mounted. Not like it can go anywhere.

Anyway, thanks ezeke!!! I Was unsure and didn't want to put this back together if there was a retainer or something that needed replacing. I appreciate the help!!
