9.8 powerhead swap

I just bought three 9.8 motors two late 60's and one 70 model. One of the late 60's motors runs great but everything else is shot. One is incomplete, may some good parts. And one is really nice but it has the thunderbolt ign and it looks burnt up. What I want to do is take the good running powerhead off and put it on the nice burntup motor. The running motor has the plug wires coming from under the the flywheel and the other is the thunderbolt ign. At a glance it looks like everything is the same except the ign. If this will work, is there anything to look out for when swapping the powerheads, like "secret things"? I am a auto mechanic and have tinkered with outboards, so I think I would understand any imput.
Thanks, Chris

I belive that the 9.8 powerheads used a couple of differant upper main brg blocks to mount differant types of ign. systems too. You can go to BAM Marine.com for parts breakdowns by the serial number if that will help

Re: 9.8 powerhead swap

I am going to swap it complete, ign and all. I just want to slip one off and slip another one on. Thanks. Also I just went out to take a closer look and I really dont see how to unbolt the powerhead. It looks like the lower cowling has to come off but will not pull up over motor??

I am pretty sure the base gasket is the same for most if not all of the 11-cui powerheads in the "black" era. If the carb linkages and throttle linkages allow it, go for it.
- Scott

All linkages look the same. The only thing is,I am not sure how to go about removing the powerhead. I have pulled several Johnson's and they just un-bolt from the top. Unless you pull the lower cowling with the powerhead, Im baffled.

Underneath the bottom cowling there are 3 phillips screws that will remove the trim band so you can get at the nuts that hold the powerhead on

Ok. I have got the powerhead off the later model, went to the earlier model. The throttle linkage doesnt pull out with the tiller handle. It kind of looks like you would have to remove the part the tiller hinges on.
