9.9 Evinrude shift problem

I took the prop shaft out of my 1981 9.9 Evinrude model E10RCID to replace the prop seals and O ring on the bearing carrier. Parts #10 and 11- spring detent and detent balls- were missing .

See parts diagrahm:

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...10RCID&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Gearcase

The motor had been shifting with no problems. Upon replacing the seals and reassembling the lower unit, I now cannot get the lower unit to shift into neutral or reverse. I can put the prop shaft in and it will turn as if in neutral but as soon as I put the reverse gear-part #8- on the prop shaft, I can no longer turn the prop shaft without the engine turning over. The engine tries to turn over whether I turn the prop shaft clockwise or counter clockwise.Moving the gear shift lever has no impact on whether the prop shaft goes to neutral. The shift linkage is working at the power head.

Is this because I need the detent spring or is there something else that I am missing?? It looks like someone has replaced the seals before and probably lost the detent spring. I have run this motor several times with no shift issues, only a gear oil leak.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Your link does not work. I guess it is to one of iBoat's competitors and is therefore blocked

You can link to parts diagrams though on the official BRP parts website

I would think you have probably incorrectly assembled the clutch dog, carrier and cradle or possibly not connected the shift rod to the cradle or not correctly reconnected the upper and lower shift rods.

I would replace the spring and balls to give a positive action to the gearchange although not the cause of your current problem.

Is the shift rod connector pushed together correctly? (#49 in the parts diagram)

Part #49 is hooked up correctly to the top of the shift rod ( part #47).

Is the bottom of the shift rod supposed to screw into the yoke ( part #13) ?? If so, that may be my problem. I will have to take it back apart and look.

The shift rods must be pushed fully into the clamp #49 and the bolts fitted so that they lie in the grooves in the rods

The lower shift rod should be screwed fully into the cradle #13. If its not connected it wont operate the gear shift!

I assume you did not remove the cradle pivot bolt.. the Phillips headed screw near the drain plug

I did not remove the phillips head screw near the drain plug. The yoke-part # 13- does move when I move the shift lever, however I cannot see the threaded portion of part #13 that the shift rod would be connected to. because there is the gear= part # 15= blocking my view. Is part #5 supposed to be turned up like the letter "U" or should it be turned upside down in the yoke like an upside down "U"? Everything on the top of the engine is like you describe that it should be.

Thanks for any further assistance !!

Like it shows in the parts diagram

You might find it useful to work through the clutch installation in the manual on Boatinfo The section on this gear box begins here: http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html#/384

That link was helpful. I took a magnet attena and probed around in the lower unit and much to my dismay came out with ONE of the detent balls. Yes just ONE, so the spring and another ball are probably in there somewhere !! b I took the lower unit off the motor, and with the prop shaft and reverse gear out, turned it every way I could trying to shake out the other ball and spring- parts #10 and 11. No luck. I can't get the phillips screw near the drain plug to come loose so I can remove the yoke. May be time for professional help or turn this one into a parts motor.

Thanks for all the advise.

Use a wee chisel and a hammer to break that screw / pivot pin loose.
