Re: 90 hp 3 cylindar overheats at idle

OK, My manual finally got here, and like the online version, there does not seem to be any information about pulling the power head. Not even anything on rebuilding the power head. I would have thought that something like that would be covered in the 'Repairs" section,, but no, I guess that information is in another manual... go figure.

Since I really do not want to pull the power head if I can get around it, I will be changing out the thermostat to see it that's the problem. However, the manual indicated a cover plate that is removed for access to the thermostat. Pity that on my motor, it is necessary to pull the head to access the thermostat... So I am now waiting for the new thermostat and a head gasket. I saw mention in another thread about the water jacket also coming off to do this. If anyone has experience doing this, I could sure use a layman's description of the subject.

Thanks.

My '69 70hp is the same set up. You have to remove the bolts from the head, including the three small ones (two if you have a thermoswitch) more towards the middle. The plugs have to come out too. Then the outer waterjacket cover comes off and voila...Mr. T-stat. I believe the Frank had mentioned something earlier about possibly switching to a later model cover style that had a separate access for the thermostat.

What did you use for a gasket for that plate? I have not seen any reference to a gasket for that. Also did you replace the head gasket?
