ResizedImage_1399586137566.jpghello all I have a leak on my 1988 90hp Johnson got it back from mechanic and it was leaking what I though was grease buy now im not so sure..he said it was smoking a bit more than he liked and reving kinda high so he turned down idle..so it sat tilted up and couple days later I noticed a bit of oil coming out of a small hole on motor housing it was black then but now that I have run it it it looks more like a water oil mix..any ideas would be appreciated..

Re: 90 hp leak

That's a water drain hole. The black residue draining could be exhaust from the exhaust tube. Normally the exhaust will be directed down through the lower unit and won't come out of that hole. Possible the lower exhaust housing seal is not in the correct position on the top of the gearcase. If that is exhaust residue-then that means that exhaust is getting close to the composite water pump housing and rubber impeller. The heat from the exhaust can reduce the life of that impeller left the way it is. The fact that the seal may be damaged could also be the reason for the smoking issue.

Make sure the shift shaft is disconnected before going any further. The shift shaft disconnects under the bottom carb, i think on that model you pull out a pin and pull the shift shaft towards you.
After thats done then just undo all the lower unit bolts. careful its heavy, you dont want it dropping down in a crash and smash scenario
