91 Seaswirl 4.3 OMC Cobra Shifter Lever Controls.

I have a 91 Seaswirl with a 4.3 Cobra. I'm changing the shifter Cable from the lever to the engine and to do that I had to put the lever in reverse to access the lever set screw and remove the lever to remove the assembly. Once i put the new cable on, mounted everything back to the panel, and put the lever on in the reverse position so i could tighten the set screw, the shifter cable doesnt move and is stuck in the reverse position. All help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure that the fine threaded plastic cable anchor is not tight against the plastic slider part of the cable.

The shift cable isn’t even connected to the shift interrupter linkage. The shift disk is just stuck in reverse position with the cable connected or not.

If you remove the cables from the control box will the shift lever move freely through all control functions?

Is the drive installed?
If these are shifted with the engine off you can sometimes find that they get jammed in gear. Have someone try to spin the prop while you work the shifter (KEY OUT ENGINE OFF).
If it’s really stuck you may have to remove the drive….

My throttle cable was still connected and the adjustment was off on the throttle cable when I replaced it. Once I disconnected the throttle cable the shift disk in the controller went back to neutral position. First time working on these things. Learning curve. Now that I have new cables installed, everything put back together, I know I have to adjust my remote cable to make sure it shifts properly without grinding. Can I adjust my remote cable (from lever controller to engine) without having to remove the outdrive? I have the manual and all it talks about is adjusting the shift cable from the motor to the outdrive.

Yes you can the idea is to get equal travel on either side of neutral

Why did you have to replace the cable? Were you having trouble with the drive not shifting? The problem may be the cable that goes through the transom.

The mounting lug molded onto the cable broke and someone thought it was a good idea to epoxy the mount and use hose clamps to keep the cable from moving. Well moving the lever the clamps shifted and the causing the cable to move in the mount. There was an excess of 1/4" of movement which must have been playing a role in why the boat was grinding into gear. So now that the cable has been replaced I need to make adjustments to the new cable for proper shifting.
