Okay, Well I don't get on this forum a whole lot, but I have found that if you want help with something besides a shiny new 4 stroke it's the best place to go with anything!

i have a 92ish Mariner 150 2.0L on my 21ft Offshore Yacht Center Console. When I first bought the boat it had a defiant issue running (found out bad switch box) but when it did run during the lake test it went about 40mph. The tach did not work. We used the boat all last week down at the beach (5 days in a row) and it ran great, but would never get over 30mph and took a long time to plane.

well I finally had time to look it over yesterday, at idle the batteries were at 14.4 volts (I have 2 on a switch, if i set it to "ALL" it would drop down a little bit") I took the grey tach wire from the top voltage regulator and moved it to the bottom one and the tach started working fine. Would this say bad regulator replace?

would the voltage regulator have any side effects where the engine wouldn't run as hard under load? I pulled plug wires off yesterday and it seemed that they were all firing... did seem like the port side were a little less strong (but I was also listening to it, didn't have an official tester with me)

the stator is new, plugs are new, one switchbox is new... so any ideas? and mainly does no tach signal mean bad regulator?

and my serial number isn't very easily read, the cowling says 2.0 it's carbed, 1 piece cowling, has 2 voltage regulators, if anyone knows around what year model it could be..

You very well could have a bad VR. Look on the circuit board (thru the potting) for a burn mark. CDI makes replacements. You can test the output of each VR separately, by disconnecting all the VR wires (input and output), and insulating the stator wires on one VR. Now check for DC charging on the connected VR.

I would think that a shorted VR could affect spark to your motor. Obviously, that is only one possibility for slow speed operation.

usually a build date stamped here, on tha block, kinda behind tha bend in tha advance arm... might be very "faint" like these, but will be theredate.jpg

serial number here usually, but that term is us used "loosely".... welsh plug.jpg

these need ta be a "sticky" for tha V6 crowd....

thanks man! i had enough of the serial number that was legible off the tag to order the parts with.... i ordered a new VR... figured if one aspect of it didn't work even if the VR was working correctly on every other aspect it probably wasn't going to last long. it was also only $79 through iboats (not the high end brand one... but hey probably will not keep the boat forever!) once i hook it up if the tach works from that one I'll know i did something productive... I'm really hoping it'll fix my slow to plane problem... i hope.... if not anyone else have any other ideas i could be checking while I wait? Like I said the motor runs fine, if I didn't know it could go faster you'd just assume it was underpowered.

once ya get tha reg deal straightened out, need ta know max rpm, prop size, motor height/offset.. gears if ya know what they are.. stock for tha 2.0 are 2 ta 1's.. did ya jus "ohm" tha stator or use a dva?.. a reg could possibly cause tha problem.. also its always recommended changin' "both" sw boxes.. a bad one can "mask" a good one thru tha bias circuit leadin' ya ta believe tha wrong one is bad......

i didnt mess with the stator at all.. it's new and charges... i just know the boat did 40mph one trip and the next did 30mph wot... so yeah... i probably should just change the other switch box... originally it was miss firing soo bad it could barely run. (if and when it did actually start). i just happened to hit it one time and it fired up and hauled ass long enough for me to hit 40 mph and then put it on the trailer... i will def be checking into RPMS and props this weekend soon as i get the part. iboats usually ships really fast. i had thought about putting some nauticus auto trim tabs on it too... don't see where it'd hurt and they are like 1/4 price of electric ones... i don't plan on keeping the boat too long... i'll be upgrading soon as one of my houses sale so don't want to do too much but i want it RIGHT when i sell it and I want it reliable and fun while I use it. its a very deep v and a heavy boat so i didn't expect it to go 60mph with a 150... but 40mph is just about perfect... rides SOOOO good though!
