I am new to this forum and this is my first i/o. The first time I run the boat it was acting sluggish and stalling out. I checked the fuel and it had water and trash in the gas so I drained and cleaned the gas tank, replaced the fuel filter and had the mercarb rebuilt. On the second trip out it was running a lot better for the first 10 minutes then died. After letting the motor cool off about 10 min it will crank back up but will only for about 30 seconds then it will die again. A friend of mine with a 99 bayliner that has the same motor says it might be the coil. From what I have found a new coil costs about $215 so I figured I would ask around before I start spending a bunch of money. Any info will sure help and thanks in advance

Go up to the adults only section on this forum and download the manual for youe engine (pick from the menu) and there are trouble shooting proceedures for testing your ignition system components that is if you have a volt meter and know how to use it. by the way it's free for the manuals Thanx to DonS. Go thru thr entire adults only section there are numerous troublshooting proceedures for common issues. Good luck!

Several possibilities, but going through the fuel and ignition systems methodicaly should find the culprit.

FWIW - coil = $50 max

Well after troubleshooting the problem I figured out it was the control module in the distributor. Thanks guys for the help. Oh I also figured out that "gm" parts are a whole lot cheaper than "mercruiser" parts.:)

I have a 92 OMC 3.0 and needed a new coil. Went to the automotive parts house and got an exact match for I think $18. Just had to swap mounting base. Should use the same coil. Mine came with electronic egnition.

The control module came from a local parts house and was $42. It also came with a lifetime guarantee. Iboats wanted $83. If it would of been the coil, the local parts house wanted $22 and Iboats wanted $75. Just for a brand name????????

Did you buy after market? If you did you won't be back on here claiming the same issues I had some of the same issues a few yrs, back and bought an after market module and it only lasted 2 weeks I tested it and Napa tested it and it kept heating up and not advancing the timming. I paid like 65.00 for the A/C Declo and that was a few yrs, ago there are some things you just have to pay the price for!

It's more so a quality control issue question.

Certain industries cannot afford to have failures. For instance, the reason most (if not all) commercial aircraft have more than one engine is to ensure they have the ability to still fly if there is a problem with one engine.

The marine brands will have higher standards for quality control (in most cases). If you are far from shore, you don't want to be stranded cause the ignition module failed on you, right. The lifetime warranty will do you no good when you cannot see the coast. Sure, the auto store will give you a new one free of charge, but they will not pay your bill for getting your boat towed back to the dock.

There isn't necessarily a right or wrong answer to where to buy that ignition module... It's just that you need to consider the possible consequences to your decision.

auto vs marine on items like fuel pump, carb, starter... can be deadly, though.

I see what your saying about marine vs auto and that does make a good point. It wasn't aftermarket but it was oem auto part. Hopefully it doesn't leave me stranded. But as far as fuel items safety is always more important than cost. Thank you guys for your input. You have really helped.
