Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

If it were ME, I would increase them to 1" by laminating 1/2" ext. grade Fir plywood with a 4' over lap. Understand??

Like This.... Using 1/2" Ply which will yield a 1" thick Stringer
OR I guess you COULD get some 1/4" and use the 3/4" you have. that would work too!!!

Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

I do remember that when we took the cap off, the stringers and foam were covered by a thin piece of plywood maybe 1/4" and had cross members going all the way across stringers and bulkhead where they butted. The cross member was 3/4" x 6" wide and went completely across all four stringers. What if I was to take a shorter piece of 1/2" or 3/4" inch about 2' long and place them on the butted area.

I understand what you mean by thickness but I would like to keep it like it was if i could to ensure cap sits back on properly

Like I said before, I am NOT a bass boat guy, I think we better wait for CadWelder to chime in. In my experience, Stringers are NOT supposed to have BUTT joints VERY Weak joints and your HUll WILL FLex and this could cause cracking but.... If that is the way it was.... then I am confused. CADWELDER will KNOW. I sent him a Private Message so He should show up but.... He may be on vacation due to the Holiday.

Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

Sorry, I've been a bit busy the past few days and haven't had much time for the forum.

#1 Who the he** installed that transom plywood and why is it going all the way across? The plywood should only be in the center section with cross braces going across and the two main stringers tie into the sides of the transom. I've never seen an Astro with the set up.

#2 As far as splicing stringers, it's not difficult, just cut a 45? angle on each end and glue a splice (scab piece) on the side of them. It'll hold forever and will never bee seen anyway.

#3 I aslo seen somthing about 14' plywood? I'm sure you can order it, but I'd hate to be the one to pay for it. Why do you need that? Just lay the deck crossways of the boat. You'll have a couple of joints (every 4') but that's quite the norm in boat building.

I'm at a different computer right now, but as soon as I get back to the house I'll post some pictures of an Astro transom so you can see what it should look like.

Hope this helps out some.

I had the same thoughts about splicing stringer, what should I do about the transom, cut it to where it is only in the center or just start all over, I really appreciate the help

how many gallons resin do you think it will take to do the entire boat, just an estimate

just took a look at the cap and you are right, the transom doesnt go all the way across so that will have to be cut back, I wasnt there when he tore it out so i didnt know how it looked. Guy put a real screwing on me, never trust a friend of a friend, this sucks.

The pic of that transom would be great, thanks cadwelderu

Sorry again for the slow repsonse.

Here a few pictures for ya. The first two are of just the new wood ready to go in, this is the same way your boat is set up. The third picture is a guide for you to build a cradle for the boat to set it, to help maitain it's shape during the rebuilding process. Boat hulls in the shape yours is in right now can easily warp and then when you glass back in the componets it will of course stay warped...and you don't wan that to happen.

Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

what would be the best way to get the transom back out now that it is glassed to the outer skin. I might as well trash it cause it has prob lost its original shape since all the wood was taken out with just ratchet straps as bracing.

Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

Well it may come out easy, I really don't know how your guy installed it. You many just have to grind, chisel, chip, pry....etc., to remove it. Not really an easy way. I'm not accustomed to removing "new" wood from a transom if you know what I mean.

You'll have to grind any tabbing loose to the outer hull with a grinder.

Good luck and don't forget the protective gear, fiberglass dust is not a good thing to breath.

We're here for whatever questions come up....

Thanks for the help guys, I'm gonna let someone else look at it and see if it is worth fixing and if not just trash it and take as a loss, this really sucks, I should have came here first and this wouldn't have happened

No problem...and don't feel bad your not the first to be where you are and you won't be the last.

Believe me I can understand the frustration....it can be overwhelming if you've never done this before. Let us know if we can help in anyway.

Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

I have been looking at these pics and something dont look right. If you will look at your pic I see that the shelves go all the way across the transom and there is a slot cut into the stringer and it is pressing the plywood against the transom. But if you will look back at my pics in the second and last one, you will notice there is no slot in the stringers and a piece of the fiberglass skin still there from when the transom was removed. I remember when we took the cap off that at the very back, on each side of the transom, it was filled with foam. There was a 1/4" piece of plywood with holes covering the foam. There was no piece going across the transom as in your pic. and in my pics you can see that the transom went further down than the one in yours. Is there a possibility that you could be wrong? Before I start tearing the transom back out, is there anywhere I might could get a drawing of some sort. This is a '93 astro f18 not sure if it is the quickfire but it does differ from the pics you have. I really like the style and would like to rebuild if I can. Thanks

No this picture I posted isn't wrong, it's jus not the exact same model as your but very similiar. I have seen your design before....in lieu of the cross brace, yours just has the stringers attaching to the center transom without the crossbrace. The sides of yours is strengthed by the plywood box builts on each side (that will be foam filled). It's doing the same thing just in three pieces rather than one. You could use the method as the pictures I posted or the way it was orginally...both will hold fine.

You'll need to installed the small pieces of rear decking first and tab them into the hull and stringers good, because the "foam boxes" will tab into to the decking. I hope you understand what I'm saying here.

Just picture yours just like the picture I posted but without the crossbrace slotted into the system.

You'll need to cut your plywood to fit your particular shape of the transom also...and I would laminate two pieces of 3/4 plywood to achieve your 1-1/2" thickness.

You wouldnt happen to know where I could get a pic of the original design? If I was to do it like the pic you have, would it still need the box filled with foam?
