forgive my noob questions
Is a left hand rotation standard? Or do I need to order a different starter.

i have tried all of the different starters for a 4.3 but none engage the flywheel .I'm baffled. Then I read on the top of the engine that is was left hand rotation . The prop is a standard right hand rotation.

LH is normal engine rotation.
Have you looked at the ring gear on the flywheel to make sure it has teeth on it?

yes it has most of its teeth. It has a couple that are chipped and 2 that are mostly broken off.
50-863007A 1 is what the mercury website states for my engine. Iboats suggests sierra 18-5913 but a searcch for the Sierra replacement shows I need sierra 18-6275.
Confused!!!

Trust the Merc site for the correct number. What you use for conversion and aftermarket is up to you. My not be right, but that's what happens with aftermarket stuff.

Be prepared to replace a lot of starters.
A bad ring gear will eat a new starter alive in no time at all.

I'd yank the engine and replace the ring gear before I pizzed away $ on a starter that you are dooming to failure.
