1 month ago Tach stopped working - replaced Regulator/Rectifier and tach works again - noticed Rectifier was dated 2003 so it has now been replaced at least twice - last week, engine started running very rough or completely stopping when I advance throttle - it will crank and run fine at idle or very low RPM's - I replaced fuel line, filter and cleaned out some debris from gas tank - still running rough - took to mechanic - he replaced plugs and cleaned carbs - still running rough - he said stator was burned looking and he was getting 14 volt reading on "something??" - he said powerpack, stator, rectifier were CDI aftermarket so we know they have been replaced at least once - he is checking wiring???

Any ideas on what is causing components to go out?

Ask your mechanic to see if the motor was setup according to OMC Service Bulletin 2276. If it was not, it may be part of your problem.

It always shock's me that someone will trouble shoot a motor, and skip right over the basic's , compression, ignition , fuel.

Make sure you or your mechanic checks for spark, goes through the fuel system (including the pump) and checks your compression. If all are good then start isolating the ignition system.
